It is nearly 17 years since Spurs won a league game at Old Trafford. On 16th December, 1989, Gary Lineker scored the solitary goal of the game. Spurs had started the game in 8th place and went fifth, whilst United stayed in 13th place, where they finished the season. It's hard to believe that their manager was Alex Ferguson, who had yet to win a trophy with United. He did manage to win the FA Cup at the end of that season, beating Crystal Palace in a replayed final, but United had lost at home to Palace the week before they lost to Spurs. United's fans had to endure an 11 match run of league games without a win, and when they lost to Spurs only 36,000 bothered to turn up. Old Trafford had a capacity of some 50,000 in those days. The United side included Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, Brian McLair and Mark Hughes. Spurs also won the home game that season! In October 1989, Spurs had won a Littlewoods Cup game at Old Trafford 3-0. Oh for days of such domination!
Down the years, United have consistently dominated Spurs. Yes, there have been tit for tat results such as the 5-1 wins for each team in the 65-66 season, but it remains a fact that Spurs have yet to win a Premiership game at "The Theatre of Dreams" - now holding 76,000 souls. Listen out for the chant of "70,000 muppets" from the Spurs contingent this Saturday.
It is though two and a half years since we lost this fixture, so we must draw on that for encouragement. Last year Jermaine Jenas scored a spectacular Beckham-like free kick to equalise Silvestre's seventh minute goal, and you don't need reminding what happened in January 2005!
There are other reasons to be fortified, despite United's 100% start to the season. United have beaten three weakish teams - Fulham, Charlton and Watford. Rooney and Scholes have to miss this Saturday's game as the final leg of their three match suspensions for their pre-season infringements. Both Gary Neville and Gabriel Heinze may still be doubtful to start this game.
Spurs will have to face their former midfielder Michael Carrick, and the battle for midfield supremacy should be interesting to say the least! Louis Saha has been in scintillating scoring form though, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is back in action, with Alan Smith coming back to fitness after his horrific broken leg last season. Smith may start on the bench this Saturday, and if he gets on you can expect an almighty cheer from the home crowd, who used to hate him and his team from across the Pennines so much!
Dimitar Berbatov returned early to Spurs Lodge from his International assignment, and whilst Martin Jol had expressed hope that he would be fit, the latest news is that Berbatov is extremely unlikely to start. Never mind, because if you have seen the pictures of the new slim-line Mido this week, you would fancy his chances of making an impression as soon as he gets a game. Mido looks super-fit, and he has found a personal trainer capable of keeping him trim too! Whether Mido gets a start ahead of Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane, both of whom are in fine fettle is another question. Maybe Robbie will play in the hole and challenge Carrick!
The great news is that Ledley King has been declared fit to start, so we can assume Calum Davenport will be relegated to the bench this week. Surely Pascal Chimbonda will make his debut, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto will continue at left back. Michael Dawson has new friends at the back this week!
Part of the reason for Spurs poor start (apart from playing badly!) is the fact they have faced successful defensive formations. United will come at us, and as always we will get an entertaining game of football. I am not so foolhardy as to predict that Spurs will break that 17 year run, but it is perfectly feasible that we can get another draw.
One piece of bad news is that the referee will be Mike Riley. Riley refereed this game in March 2002, and in my view made one of the most apalling errors of his career. Read the report here
