We last played Manchester United on Saturday 2nd February. It was a home game, and at the time United were top of the table, whilst Spurs were 11th. Both teams finished in those respective positions. A few weeks ago, most Spurs fans would give anything for the promise of an 11th place finish, but now I think we can set our ambitions a little higher.
Spurs took a 21st minute lead through a certain Dimitar Berbatov, who scored after Van Der Sar failed to hold a low cross by Aaron Lennon. Spurs held out until seconds from the end, when Tevez ruined their dream of a first league victory since May 2001. That was the last game of a season in which United had already won the Premier League, and actually lost their last three league games. Willem Korsten effectively signed off his Spurs career with two goals in Spurs' 3-1 victory.
For different reasons, United will be missing some key personnel tomorrow. Wayne Rooney got his fifth booking last week against Sunderland (who United struggled to beat), and Patrice Evra has to serve a 4 match ban imposed after the incident at Stamford Bridge in April. Ronaldo walked off in the Sunderland game suffering a hip injury, but is expected to be fit tomorrow. Berbatov has been described as doubtful, but if he does play will receive a largely negative reception for various reasons, including his widely reported disruptive behaviour in pre-season and during the transfer window. Berbatov remains a class act of course, but I wonder if the Old Trafford faithful are as keen on him as they are on skilful work horses like Rooney, Tevez and not forgetting the thoroughbred Ronaldo?
United will be even keener than usual to get a result here, as they are off to Japan for the World Club Championship, and will miss next week-end's Premier League fixtures. That will put United two league games behind everyone else, and Sir Alex has already bemoaned his fixture list pile-up, which could include a League Cup Final against us! Speaking of the League Cup it is ten years ago this month since we beat United in the 5th Round of that competition. Perhaps I will have a chance to make further refence to that game when previewing the Carling Cup Final later this season!
Both Spurs and United are in the top six of the current form table, taking the last 6 games into consideration. In that time, both teams have won four games.
Spurs are hoping that Ledley King will be fit to face his former team-mate, but I fancy that Harry Redknapp will err on the side of caution and preserve our somewhat frail club captain and his knee. I am sure that Jonathan Woodgate would relish the chance to be "looking after" Mr Berbatov, and that would be a battle to savour.
The first official game of Harry Redknapp's reign at Spurs was at The Emirates, where we got that dramatic 4-4 draw. We have not drawn a game since, and whilst I dream of victory, I for one would be satisfied with a point tomorrow, and fancy the draw as a result.
Did you know? It is mid-December and the Spurs club handbook is finally out! Do you remember the days when this publication was available on the first day of the season? I think that publication was due about the time of the Bolton game, but that it had to be pulled due to the sacking of Juande Ramos and his team. I'll be looking out for a copy, but it does not have the same magic as the old pocket handbooks, which are very collectable.
