No happy re-unions here!
When Spurs played at Portsmouth on 28th September last year, the south coast side were managed by Harry Redknapp and lined up as follows:- James (still at Portsmouth); Johnson (now at Liverpool), Campbell (Capt. - say no more), Distin (now at Everton), Belhadj (still at Portsmouth); Little (now at Sheffield United), (sub Utaka - still at Portsmouth), Diarra (now at Real Madrid), Hughes (still there), Traore (back with the goonerss); Defoe (sub Kaboul - still there) & Crouch.
Both Defoe and Crouch scored as Pompey ran out 2-0 winners. Jermain Defoe was actually cheered by Spurs fans after he scored a penalty against us to give the home side the lead.
That Portsmouth team sheet is as much evidence as you need really to illustrate how Portsmouth have been decimated in the last year. The rancour between the two sets of fans will be at a high level, as Redknapp is partly blamed by Pompey fans for deserting them, but also for being part of the high-spending set-up that put them in their present predicament. It's as if they have forgotten the FA Cup victory that Harry gave them, that also ironically led to Harry being granted the freedom of the City - presented after he had joined Spurs!
This match was also the game when there was a witch-hunt against Spurs fans following their usual baiting of Sol Campbell. "Racist abuse" headlines followed, along with "most wanted " pictures of 16 Spurs fans. Note that no person has been convicted of any racist offence. Four people pleaded guilty to the "Sol song", five accepted cautions for "indecent chanting", and the only two persons to put up a fight were initially convicted, but then had the case slung out on appeal by a Judge who questioned the quality of evidence presented by the Police and CPS. You can expect a hummed version of the "Sol Song" this week, and perhaps a chant in praise of one of the two fans who fought the law and won their case along with their right to again attend games.
Back to the football, and by the time we played Portsmouth at home in January, Redknapp was ours and Jermain Defoe was back. Defoe scored his second home debut goal, and incidentally had scored his first debut goal for Spurs against Portsmouth back in 2004. Niko Kranjcar was playing for Pompey, who got a 1-1 draw in an entertaining game that left both sides in the midst of the relegation battle. After Harry's dream start, Spurs were back in the mire somewhat after a dip in form over Christmas and the New Year.
Former Spurs players that could be involved for Portsmouth this week are Younes Kaboul, Michael Brown and Kevin-Prince Boateng. They'll all be fired up to perform, but Boateng in particular will feel he has a point to prove, having been given little chance at White Hart Lane. Jamie O'Hara, who is on loan here will have to sit it out. I wonder who he'll be cheering for?
Portsmouth got their very first points of the season last time out with a 1-0 win at Wolves. The goal was scored by another loan player - Algerian midfielder Hassan Yebda. It's been a disastrous league start for Pompey, but they have won their way through to the fourth round of the Carling Cup with successes at home to Hereford, and away to League One side Carlisle. With Stoke at home in the next round, they'll fancy their chances, but of course the focus is on the Premier League at the moment.
Portsmouth have injury doubts about former Fulham midfielder Papa Boupa Diop, and defender Hermann Hreidarsson (he's been relegated with one or two teams before!).
As for Spurs, Jonathan Woodgate is back in training and it is probably too early for him to make a first start for the season. Luka Modric is also another week away from return, which opens the way for Niko Kranjcar to join Defoe and Crouch against their former team. Wilson Palacios probably would not have played anyway, due to jet-lag after his mid-week game in Central America, but as he has been ordered to stay at home by the President of Honduras to celebrate World Cup qualification, he definitely won't be around this week-end. That will probably mean Huddlestone and Jenas in the middle for Spurs, with Michael Dawson perhaps partnering Sebastien Bassong at the back, although there are still hopes about Ledley King's availability.
The form book says that Spurs should win this one, but form means nothing compared to a fired up home team supported by a vociferous crowd. It will be a tricky game for Spurs, but I take them to win by two goals.
