A tale of second comings at Christmas
Once again, at the time of writing, I have to use the phrase "weather permitting" we shall travel to Villa Park on Boxing Day for some much awaited Premier League action. The subject of a winter break for football in England often arises, but then there is the question of when to have it? Arsene Wenger's most recent suggestion is to take December and January off completely and play all our football between February and November, but then where does that leave us fans in the dark days of winter, and when do we mere mortals fit in our holidays?
Villa Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs in Premier League days, with only two away wins to our credit. There are mixed feelings about Boxing Day meetings too! On Boxing Day 2006, Spurs beat Villa 2-1 at White Hart Lane, thanks to two goals by Jermain Defoe. On the other hand, 9 years previously we travelled to Villa Park and lost 4-1, when Stan Collymore scored two, as did Mark Draper. The solitary Spurs scorer was Colin Calderwood. These were the dark days of the 97-98 season, but good news was on the horizon, with Jurgen Klinsmann making his second debut for Spurs in our next game against Arsenal.
Our first Premier League win at Villa Park came on 18th January, 2003, when Teddy Sheringham was in HIS second spell as a Spurs player. It was Sheringham who scored the solitary goal with a 70th minute volley from inside the area. In this game, Peter Crouch was a Villa substitute, and was greeted with some abuse by away supporters, who labelled him a "Spurs reject". Those same supporters are thankful for Crouch's Champions League goals this season, and Rafael van der Vaart is grateful for a few knock-downs too!
Sticking with the "second coming" theme, our second Premier League win at Villa Park was in March 2009, and came during a vital six game unbeaten run after the re-signing of Robbie Keane. Robbie skippered the side in this game, and all but scored himself in the 49th minute, except for Darren Bent's goal-line touch. Jermaine Jenas scored an early goal for Spurs. This was the game in which Harry Redknapp tried to cancel out Ashley Young with Didier Zokora, who failed, but was replaced by the wily Vedran Corluka, who snuffed out Young's threat.
Spurs did well on their last visit to Villa gaining a more than deserved point. Agbonlahor put the home side in a tenth minute lead, and despite gradually dominating the game, it took until Spurs hero Michael Dawson score with a powerful rising 77th minute shot for us to draw level. Jermain Defoe had a goal disallowed for alleged handball, and there was a debate about whether or not Dawson also handled the ball, but his goal stood.
That Crouch/Van der Vaart combination came to the fore in this season's home game against Villa, when Crouch was the provider and Van der Vaart the finisher for both Spurs' goals in a 2-1 win. Rafa was on his record home scoring run, which lasted 6 games. He will make a welcome return on Sunday, but whether it is in combination with Crouch remains to be seen. With Younes Kaboul, Wilson Palacios and perhaps Jenas all being available for selection, Harry Redknapp will have plenty of selection options. His team will surely include Michael Dawson who did so well on his return in our last game against Chelsea.
The game at White Hart Lane was one of Gerard Houllier's early games in charge on his return to the Premier League, and his team did offer strong opposition in a tense game. Villa's form in recent games is disturbing though, with four consecutive defeats before they beat West Brom in their last game. Those defeats included the controversial Carling Cup defeat at St. Andrews, which ended in crowd trouble in the first evening Birmingham Derby for a number of years. Villa have dropped to 15th place, but the league is still tight, and there are just 7 points between the two teams. This time last year, Villa were in the fourth place being chased by Spurs.
So many factors go into the mix for those seeking to predict the result of this game. Apart from form, and the weather, the mood of the fans could be vital, with a bumper holiday crowd likely. Hopefully our players will not have over-indulged on Christmas dinner and alcohol! A draw is the easiest prediction to make, but I seriously fancy Spurs to take all three points. However, I'll be hoping for an early goal to quieten those Holte Enders!
I wish all readers a very happy, peaceful and safe Christmas!
