A tough nut to crack.

Tony Pulis's Stoke City are in their third season in the Premier League after so many years in trying to regain their top flight status, and they are becoming part of the furniture. Not many people would have backed them to come this far, but Stoke's 35th manager (in his second spell in the post) has to take so much credit for what he has achieved for "The Potters".

Pulis has now invested a club record transfer fee of some £8 million for Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones, once linked with Spurs, and who typifies the gutsy but powerfully skilful football demanded by Pulis - once Harry Redknapp's protege. Stoke's previous record signing was Spurs fan Dave Kitson, who was not really able to hold a commanding position and actually spent part of last season on loan at Middlesbrough.

Stoke's other arrivals include Everton's reserve keeper Carlo Nash, replacing Steve Simonsen who has gone to Sheffield United. 32 year old James Beattie has gone to Scotland to play his football with Rangers, but the Stoke attack may also feature Ricardo Fuller and former MMiddlesbrough striker - the Turkish Tuncay. Plenty of familiar names remain, such as former Spur Matthew Etherington, goalkeeper Sorensen, Higginbotham, Huth and Shawcross and of course Rory Delap.

Stoke's form over their last six league games has not been good, with only one win at Fulham, last season. Last week they fell victim to a spectacular free kick by Wolves' David Jones in a 2-1 defeat. They will be keen to give their home fans something to cheer, and Harry Redknapp will not exactly be savouring the match.

Spurs are in the middle of a tough opening programme of 5 games in 15 days, due to their Champions League Play-Off tie. Both Jermain Defoe and Luka Modric were described as doubts after the 3-2 defeat on Astroturf against Young Boys. Rumour has it that William Gallas is having a medical for Spurs today, and despite his Arsenal antecedents, his toughness is just what Spurs would need in a game like this. Whether Spurs fans can forgive his history, and whether all fans can forgive his goal against The Republic of Ireland in last year's World Cup qualifier is another question. I suppose the real cheat in that situation was Thierry Henry.

In the four games we have played against Stoke in their current Premier League sojurn, the honours are even with two wins apiece.Last season Spurs suffered a surprise home defeat against Stoke, despite dominating the play, but they got revenge in the return game at The Britanania Stadium with a welcome 2-1 victory thanks to goals from loanee Eidur Gudjohnssen and Niko Kranjcar. Kranjcar played just 45 minutes on Tuesday night, and if Modric doesn't make this game, Niko might well get a start on Saturday.

Aaron Lennon is of course rested having taken no part in the mid-week game, and if Defoe can't make this one we could see Robbie Keane and Crouch in tandem. Obviously I'd love to see a win, but with no draw so far in our Premier league meetings against Stoke, I have a funny feeling we could see the first stalemate this Saturday. Hopefully Ledley King will return to stabilise the Spurs defence.

Ten years ago, Stoke were in the old Division Two, and had finished 6th in the 1999-2000 season, whilst Tottenham were finishing tenth in the Premier League. Stoke were also in Division Two in the Spurs Double season. On the nearest corresponding date on August 22nd 1960, Spurs were beating Blackpool 3-1 away from home. Let's hope for away victory tomorrow, but I am not at all confident.
