The next phase of the season starts here!
The last time we played Sunderland (at The Stadium of Light) was not a pleasant occasion, as former Spur Darren Bent scored twice (once as early as the first minute) to rub salt into our wounds regarding his departure from Spurs. He was happy to celebrate brazenly in front of us too. Bent's second goal was a penalty, but Heurelho Gomes performed some heroics to save another two penalties by Bent, having also saved from Bent from the spot in last year's home game, which Spurs won 2-0.
That home game last year was played almost a year ago to the day, when Bent was one of the former Spurs players to receive a fond reception. (Steed Malbranque was another). That Bent celebration in front of the away fans in April was harder to bear than usual. Bent missed Saturday's win against Stoke with a hamstring injury and is described as doubtful for tomorrow's game. Former Spurs' loan player Fraizer Campbell will definitely be out as he has a long term knee injury. The Spurs team news is not great as Harry Redknapp has described Van der Vaart as doubtful, but not out of the reckoning, whilst Aaron Lennon will definitely miss the game, along with Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Jermain Defoe, who is approaching fitness.
Despite Sunderland's home win on Saturday, in which Steed Malbranque dollied a penalty into the goalkeeper's arms, both teams have some pride to restore. It will take a long, long time for the Black Cats to live down their 5-1 defeat at Newcastle last Sunday. It was Sunderland's biggest Derby Day defeat since Christmas 1955, when they lost 6-2 away. The year before, on Boxing Day, Sunderland had lost 6-1 at home to the "Magpies". In April 2006, Newcastle won 4-1 at The Stadium of Light, with that man Shearer amongst the goalscorers.
Sunderland fans will not thank me for reminding them of such dark days, and despite Spurs good record against their team in the Premier League, this season and the last week-end has shown there is no such thing as a "given" result. Both teams are on 15 points with an identical goal difference. 6 points from the two games this week would make all the difference in the next phase of the season. Sunderland are at Chelsea next Sunday, so they'll be keen to get something from our game.
In the absence of Bent, recent (and biggest signing) Asamoah Gyan, scored both goals in the win against Stoke, in which Sunderland got away with a possible handball, and ball over the line incident in which neither a penalty or goal was given for Stoke. Defender Titus Bramble will be available after serving his one match suspension on Saturday, having been sent off at Newcastle for a "professional" foul. Bramble played for Wigan in the historic 9-1 win last November, which funnily enough was the game after we played Sunderland. We would of course love half as many goals tomorrow!
Robbie Keane is also missing tomorrow, with the ankle injury he picked up in training last Friday, which meant he was not involved at Bolton. With only two first team strikers fit then, if Van der Vaart does have to sit this one out, it looks like Modric will start behind either Pavlyuchenko or Crouch, and maybe Jenas will play beside Huddlestone in a stronger midfield. Bassong must be due a game too surely?
Sunderland are a proud club, with determined players who still need to restore some pride after last week's defeat. They will be resilient to a Spurs side that needs to up its game several notches from the poor effort at Bolton. The weather has been grim and should give us good old fashioned footballing conditions. Let's hope for a good old fashioned high tempo game by Spurs, and a vital home win. I'll go for a 3-1.
