No "Villany" please!

Last season, for only the second time in our Premier League history, Spurs completed the league "double" over Aston Villa. Rafa van der Vaart scored all our goals in both 2-1 wins. We must hope that he is fit to start on Monday night. Rafa declared that he would be available, but the club has described him as 75% fit, with the intention being to move him to 100% fitness in time for the game. No doubt Jermain Defoe will be hoping for a chance to shine right from the start, but if fit, we know that Rafa will start.

The morale and confidence levels of Spurs players must be really high. Scott Parker and Kyle Walker were voted as man of the match in England's two wins; Gareth Bale excelled for Wales, and the Croatians have qualified for Euro 2012, although Niko Kranjcar remains sidelined through injury. Not only Luka Modric, but Vedran Corluka are fit and ready to resume battle for the Spurs cause.

Former Spur Darren Bent will be feeling pretty good to after his header against Spain led to the England goal by Frank Lampard. Bent hasn't played against Spurs since April 2010, when he gleefully celebrated both his goals in a 3-1 win for Sunderland (Sunderland 3 Spurs 1 - 3rd April, 2010). Last November, when Sunderland visited, Bent had a hamstring problem, and by the time he joined Villa in January, Spurs had already played Villa at home and away. ( Last season's Spurs Odyssey match reports).

Then there's yet another ex-Spur with an axe to grind - right back Alan Hutton. Hutton escaped major punishment but not major publicity recently when a ferocious tackle put West Brom's Shane Long out of the game for a few weeks. Hutton versus Bale should be good fun for Spurs fans, but we want no "Villany" on our players, thanks very much.

My thanks go to Declan Mulcahy for most of the following comments in this article

At one point Spurs had a very good record against Aston Villa. Between 1938 and 1964 Villa did not win a match. However in the last 50 years in matches at White Hart Lane Villa have scored five goals twice and four on four occasions. There is only one other team I can think of off the top of my head who has a comparable record and good etiquette does not permit me to name that team.

Possibly the most famous Villa game at White Hart Lane is the one in March 1966. Spurs had a great first half. They were 3-0 up after 15 minutes and led 4-1 at half time. Robertson made it 5-1 seven minutes into the second half and things looked pretty good.

However then it all went pear-shaped. Villa scored three goals in five minutes and by the hour mark it was 5-4. Villa’s journeyman centre forward Tony Hateley was totally dominating Spurs journeyman centre half Laurie Brown at this point.

The scored remained 5-4 until three minutes from the end when Hateley scored his fourth goal. There was more drama to come. Deakin got clean through. He went round Jennings and had an open goal in front of him. However he hesitated and Mullery had enough time to clear his shot off the goal line. Imagine the headlines if Villa had won.

In April 1992 Spurs started well again. They were two up after 13 minutes thanks to Lineker and a Teale own goal. However by half time it was 2-2. Yorke gave Villa the lead early in the second half. Daley and Regis scored in the last five minutes to make it 5-2.

Wednesday 23 August 1978 was a night for Spurs’ supporters to look forward to. It was the first home match since returning to the first division and the two exciting new signings Ardiles and Villa were to make their home debut. (Ed: I was amongst the home crowd that gave our new Argentinean World Cup heroes a ticker-tape welcome.) In addition Spurs had got a good result the previous Saturday with an away draw to the league champions Nottingham Forest.

Unfortunately Villa (the Aston variety) made it largely a night to forget. Spurs started nervously. Evans put Villa ahead in the first half when Spurs failed to clear a corner. Gregory put them two up just after the break. Spurs gained some hope when Ardiles was fouled and Hoddle converted the penalty. However Aston Villa obviously had not read the script and scored two more goals in three minutes. This was (the late) Ian Moores' last game for Spurs.

In October 1994 both Spurs and Villa sacked their managers Ardiles and Atkinson. By the time the teams met in November Spurs had appointed Gerry Francis manager. This was his first match. But Villa still had not appointed a manager.

Managerless Villa got off to a great start and led 3-0 after 27 minutes. Sheringham pulled one back before half time. Klinsmann scored from a penalty after Sheringham was fouled. In the 74th minute Klinsmann brought the teams level though the goal is credited as a Bosnich own goal. There things stood until a certain Garry Parker set Saunders up in the last minute. He went past Mabbutt before unleashing the winning goal.

In April 2000 Spurs performed their usual routine going 2-0 up against Villa just after the interval through goals from Iversen and Armstrong. Dublin reduced the deficit with a penalty. Then between the 69th and 74th minute Villa went from 1-2 to 4-2 with goals from Dublin again, Carbone and little Alan Wright. (Spurs 2 Aston Villa 4 - 15th April 2000).

In October 2007 Spurs were celebrating their 125th anniversary in fancy dress, dressed up as Blackburn Rovers. Villa were obviously unaware that Spurs were celebrating. Berbatov headed Spurs into the lead but Laursen who normally did not score responded two minutes later following a corner. That man Laursen scored again ten minutes later and before the break Agbonlahor rounded Dawson to put Villa 3-1 up. It looked all over when Gardner made it 4-1 early in the second half.

Spurs got one back when Chimbonda of all people scored from a rebound. With eight minutes left Harewood committed a stupid foul on Bent in the box and Keane scored from the penalty. Spurs dominated the last eight minutes. Towards the end Villa could not clear the ball from their own box and Kaboul blasted it into the top right hand corner and the stadium erupted. (Spurs 4 Aston Villa 4 - 1st October, 2007)

This season, Villa remained unbeaten in the league for their first 7 games, then lost twice consecutively, at "The Etihad" stadium, Manchester, then at home to West Brom. They have drawn 6 of the 11 games they have played so far, and got kicked out of the Carling Cup at home to lowly Bolton. Spurs' Jermaine Jenas will not be eligible for this game anyway, but he has only just made his come-back from injury.

For Spurs, the only definite absentees will be Niko Kranjcar, Danny Rose, Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone. We have to wait till Monday night for our game, but by then the results of the Man City - Newcastle and Chelsea - Liverpool games may encourage us even more to make the climb into the top four. The bookies are making us very hot favourites, withs odds as short as 1/2, and I'll take us to win our third consecutive league game 3-1!

Oh, and let's hope that manager Harry Redknapp is on the touchline, and that he gets a massive cheer!
