Beware the Ex-Spur Factor
There will be a love-in at Craven Cottage tomorrow, and the love will be directed at Fulham manager Martin Jol from the thousands of Spurs fans travelling across London for another Derby match. No Spurs fan agreed with the undignified nature of Jol's sacking in October 2007, on the night when Spurs lost just their second home game in European Football against Getafe (Surreal back-drop to a sacking). Tomorrow's game will be the first time Spurs have played against a team managed by Jol since that night.
Jol is a dignified man, but he will have taken great satisfaction from putting one over his successsor at Tottenham , Juande Ramos, earlier this season, when Fulham knocked out Ramos's side Dnipro in the Fourth Qualifying round of this year's Europa League. Fulham have had to negotiate all four qualifying rounds, but they are sitting in a good position in their group, after beating Wisla Krakow 4-1 on Thursday night.
For Fulham, tomorrow's game will be their 24th competitive game of the season, compared to Spurs' 17 games, some of which of course have been played without their first team players. Fulham have had no such luxury, and it will be interesting to see how the two strategies compare tomorrow. Fulham will be bubbling after a a great win on Thursday, which included some great goals, not least by Andy Johnson, who scored two, the second of which was quite sublime.
It's funny how what comes around, comes around in football, as Juande Ramos's quite short career at Tottenham was almost at an end when Spurs played Wisla Krakow early in the 2008-09 season (Spurs Odyssey match reports 2008-09)
An even shorter managerial career at Tottenham came to an end after a game at Craven Cottage in October 2004, when after losing only his 13th match in charge, the mysterious Jacques Santini departed, and Martin Jol took over. Santini had one brief further spell in management at Auxerre, but has disappeared since. (Now I understand a consultant for Canal+) Martin Jol's great achievment with Spurs was to qualify for Europe through league position in two successive seasons, which had not been done for a long time. Ironically, Spurs and their fans no longer seem to value the Europa League, having had that taste last year of Champions league football.
Tomorrow's match is going to be a test of Spurs' policy of leaving their first team at home, whilst a weak side made this week's trip to Russia. Only victory will fully satisfy this fan, but nobody is going to take such a result for granted against a team which has not just an ex-Spurs manager but four players who have Spurs connections. These are Stephen Kelly, Simon Davies, Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy, all of whom would love to play. Kelly has only made one league start, whilst Simon Davies is yet to play this season, due to a knee injury. Zamora and Murphy will both be in the reckoning though, and keen as ever to perform, and even score.
Fulham's signings this season include John Arne Riise from Roma, who once played for Liverpool, and Bryan Ruiz from FC Twente. Ruiz played against us in our 4-1 victory in September last year, but not in the 3-3 draw In Holland. Spurs will also have to look out for the ever threatening Clint Dempsey.
We did the double over Fulham last season, and they haven't beaten us in the league since November 2008, although their fans will be crowing about last season's embarrassing 4-0 FA Cup defeat. However, Spurs don't seem to "do cups" these days. Let's hope that focus on Premier League results pays off this week-end. I'm feeling confident this week and have predicted a 3-1 to Spurs!
For the record, Martin Jol managed Spurs through 114 league games, and Harry Redknapp has been in charge for 115 league games. Their comparitive league records are as follows:-
P W D L F-A Win%
Redknapp 115 57 29 29 178-134 50
Jol 114 47 30 37 169-148 41
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp will not be present at Craven Cottage as he is taking Doctor's orders to fully recuperate from his stent surgery this week. I hope that the Spurs fans find an extra cheer or two for Harry, and don't get carried away with that love-in for Jol!
The referee for this game is Peter Walton, who last refereed Spurs for their 2-0 win at Molineux in September. Mr Walton has only been in charghe of two Spurs games since we started grading referees early in 2010, but he has a respectable average of 6.8, and two Spurs wins to his credit!
