Easter win hunt!
This will be our fiftieth league meeting with Norwich, and our tenth meeting in the Premier League. We do seem to meet "The Canaries" regularly at either Easter or Christmas holidays too. Our away game this season was on December 27th, when we won 2-0, and Gareth Bale starred with both goals. On this day, Harry Redknapp tried a 4-3-2-1 formation, with both Bale and Van der Vaart given free roles behind Adebayor and in front of Parker, Sandro and Modric. (Norwich 0 Spurs 2 - 27.12.11) There was a simply magnificent master-class team performance that day, and Bale was out of this world scoring 9/10 on the "Spursometer".
We need a similar performance tomorrow to regain third place, after Arsenal's 1-0 win over Man City. Tempers and nervees amongst the Spurs faithful are getting fraught, and "Spurs-land" will not be a pleasant place to be, if we fail to finish in that top four after the season we have had.
Previous Easter meetings with Norwich include a 1-0 win on Easter Monday 1995, when Gica Popescu made his final appearance in our colours. Teddy Sheringham scored a 36th minute winner. On January 2nd that year, Popescu had famously scored against Arsenal from 12 yards to give us a 1-0 win. This was the last time we finished above Arsenal in the league. I still hope for the same this year. Incidentally, we also played Norwich at Carrow Road on Boxing Day that season, and won 2-0. There's a good omen for tomorrow, I think!
On April 2nd, 1994, (Easter Saturday) we travelled to Carrow Road and won 2-1. Teddy Sheringham was again a scorer, and we also benefited from an own goal. The trend continues with a 5-1 at home on Good Friday 1993. Our goalscorers were Ruddock, Sheringham (2), Barmby and Nayim.
Norwich have been in indifferent form recently, with just one win in seven games, and that was a 2-1 win at home to bottom club Wolves. They have got the magic 40 points though, and realistically they are safe for Premier League football next season. Their best win of the season was a 4-2 at home to Newcastle in December. "The Canaries" have not lost by more than the odd goal since a 3-0 at Sunderland on February 1st.
Once again, Norwich will have to do without our own Kyle Naughton, but they have a good team spirit and excellent work ethic. 30 year old striker Grant Holt can be a bit of a handful, and has scored 6 goals in his last 7 games for the club. With 13 league goals to his name, Holt is by far and away the club's leading scorer this season. There will not be a lack of effort by the visitors in this game, and we can expect another battle.
With that semi-final against Chelsea now on the horizon, and these two games in two days, team changes are surely inevitable for Harry Redknapp. This ought to be a game for an old fashioned 4-4-2, with Lennon and Bale on the flanks, and perhaps Jake Livermore giving one of the central midfielders a breather. If Bale is fit, after that late challenge and possible injury on Saturday, he must play on the flank in tandem with Aaron. I think we might see Defoe and Saha start this one. I'm feeling good about our prospects and have gone for a 3-0 win.
