Chance for Spurs to open up a top four gap
Without wishing success upon our enemies down the road, it is a fact that West Brom play at The Emirates today, and if Arsenal were to win, and we could manage a win at Goodison Park tomorrow, then Spurs would open up a three point cushion to hold at least fourth place. Chelsea face a trip to Sunderland, and any slip-up on their part could lead to Spurs gaining third place.
It's a big challenge for Spurs, but with both the West Brom and Chelsea results to be known later today, what bigger incentive could the team need, before kick-off against Everton?
Spurs are, after all, on a run of four successive victories in the league and Europa League, and five games unbeaten. Still missing key players, Andre Villas-Boas is moving well towards the achievement of his early season objectives.
Everton are tough opposition, of course, and well placed in sixth, only three points behind us. They have plenty of incentive too, and their fans will be keen to see their side win their first game in five. The "Toffees" made an excellent start to this season, beating Man Utd on the first day before beating Villa in their second game. They won four of ther first six games and held second place in early October.
Recently though, Everton's form has dipped a little, with too many draws. Mind you, their last game was at Man City, against whom, David Moyes' team has a good record in recent seasons, despite the money that has been ploughed into City. The only win for Everton in their last six games was at home to struggling Sunderland.
Once upon a time we were a bogey team for Everton, but in recent years their form has been very good against us. They haven't lost at home to Spurs since February, 2007, when Jermaine Jenas scored a late, late winner for us (Everton 1 Spurs 2 - 21st Feb 2007), and they have only lost three of their last 11 games against us. Each of those defeats has been at White Hart Lane (one in the Carling Cup), and they have won their last two home games against Spurs.
Everton manager David Moyes has "farmed" ailing Rangers well over the last twelve months. Firstly he acquired Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic in January, who scored their winner against us in March. Jelavic has settled into the Premier League very well, scoring 14 goals in 24 league games for Everton.
In the summer window, Moyes signed 26 year old Steven Naismith, who has an overall record of scoring once in every three games, roughly speaking. he has scored three goals in 7 games for Everton.
The Belgian connections in the Spurs team know all about Marouane Fellaini, of course. He is such a strong, and skilful player, and he has scored 8 league goals in 13 games, making him Everton's top scorer at this stage. Steven Pienaar will be keen to prove to Spurs that he should have been given more of a chance in his brief sojurn at The Lane, but, truth be told, Goodison Park is where his heart lies.
Spurs are playing their 24th game of the season here, whilst for Everton, with no Europe, and an early exit from the League Cup, it will be their 18th game. AVB managed to rest Dembele for most of Thursday night's game, and the likelihood is that William Gallas will return at centre-back, allowing Vertonghen to move to left back. In the absense of Bale, utilising Dempsey on the left, but with a free role behind the striker/s has been working well. It remains to be seen whether Spurs go for a single striker formation, or work with Adebayor and Defoe. I'd prefer the latter.
Having outlined the potential benefits of a win, which is achievable for Spurs, my gut feeling, and prediction, is that this will be a 1-1 draw.
