Can Spurs succeed where City failed
When Spurs drew 0-0 at The Stadium of Light in April, it was our first stalemate against Sunderland in 25 games since August, 1990 in front of a crowd of 30,575. There will be a few more in the ground tomorrow, and spirits will be hig after Martin O'Neill's side managed their first back to back Premier League wins since February, with a home win against Manchester City.
O'Neill seems to have a bit of a hex against Roberto Mancini's side in recent meetings between the two sides. City beat Sunderland 3-0 at The Etihad in October, but they suffered only their second defeat of the season on Boxing Day at the hands of the "Black Cats". It came from a soft goal, scored by former City man Adam Johnson, squeezing just inside Joe Hart's left-hand post.
Johnson and the crowd will be buoyed by the goal and the result, and the crowd will be crowing because with that win, the "Mackems" overtook Newcastle in the Premier League table.
On the subject of Sunderland and Manchester City, last season City conceded a late, late winner by Ji Dong-won at The Stadium of Light, and Sunderland got a 3-3 draw at City's ground, and were the only team to take league points at The Etihad. The South Korean International has fallen out of favour and has yet to play for O'Neill this season.
Former Wolves striker Steven Fletcher has found his goal-scoring form again recently after a barren spell of 8 games for club and country, and most recently scored the solitary goal at Southampton last Saturday.
Sunderland have been missing the combative Lee Cattermole since November with a knee injury which will keep him out of action for a further 6 weeks. One former Manchester United defender John O'Shea missed the Boxing Day game, but will perhaps return tomorrow, whereas another former United man Wes Brown has been out of action with a cruciate knee ligament injury for nearly a year now.
Sunderland will be affected by the enforced absence of Spurs loanee Danny Rose, who has been in good form this season, and will hopefully return to Spurs, rather than grace another Premier League team, when his season-long loan ends.
Can Spurs get a fourth successive clean sheet? More importantly, can they win and keep up the challenge for that top four place? West Brom are at Old Trafford tomorrow and Everton host Chelsea on Sunday. In that context, a draw at Sunderland would not be a bad result considering their current form, but if Spurs play with the desire and precision demonstrated in the second half against Villa, they can surely get another three points.
Scott Parker looked fresh and fit enough at Villa and may take Dembele's place as part of a valid Christmas rotation policy. Dembele got a knock on Boxing Day. Similarly, Gylfi Sigurdsson might add some spark to Spurs' attacking options as a replacement for Adebayor, who still hasn't found the form we saw from him last season.
I'll be bold, and go for a 2-0 Spurs win!
The referee for this game is Martin Atkinson. This is not good news because we have lost our last three games with him and his team in charge. We lost at home to Wigan, away to Newcastle, and in that disastrous FA Cup semi-final, where the referee gave a "goal that wasn't". Our last win with Mr. Atkinson in the middle was at home to Everton last January. We never lose when Aaron scores, so maaybe he'll get a goal tomorrow!
· On this day 10 years ago, Spurs lost 2-1 at Newcastle. Newcastle scored all three goals!
· 10 years ago in the Premier League, Woodgate and Milner scored Leeds' goals in a 2-0 win against Chelsea
