Something to play for!
Spurs do have something to play for on the last day of the season. It might only be fifth place in the Premier League Table, but should that be achieved, we would definitely not have to worry about the play-off round of next season's Europa League. To finish fifth, we do have to beat Everton and hope that Liverpool fail to win at Stoke.
On the other hand, should Spurs lose, and Southampton get a point at The Etihad Stadium, then we would drop to seventh, in which case we would need Arsenal to win the FA Cup next week to grant us passage to Europe. (This would also occur if Southampton get a point more than us in Sunday's games - i.e if we drew and they won) Many would take a Villa win and seventh place then! Man City are already guaranteed a top three finish and Champions League group stage entry, so there is a risk Southampton would face a side playing at less than 100%.
With no summer tournament for the European senior International teams, this is the second time the Premier League's last game has been played on May 24th. On the only other occasion, in 2009, we also finished our season in Liverpool, losing 3-1 at Anfield.
This will not be our latest end to a season though. There have been two occasions when our season has finished later. One was the notorious 2-0 defeat in Rotterdam against Feyenoord in the second leg of the 1974 UEFA Cup Final. (29th May) That was an occasion which gave Bill Nicholson so much distress, and he resigned as our esteeemed manager early in the next season, following a disappointing start.
The other late finish was on 27th May, 1982, when Glenn Hoddle scored the deciding goal in the FA Cup Final replay against QPR. It was the second consecutive Cup Final to go to a replay, both won by Spurs, who also became the first team to retain the trophy since they did it in 1962. Others have done it since, and another London side could do that again next week, but we won't dwell on that!
Whilst we have our biggest points tally against a single Premier League team in our matches against Everton, we haven't always had it our way in recent years. Like us, Everton are one of the seven ever-presents in the Premier League. We are in fifth place in that all-time table, with only Everton and Villa below us. We haven't lost in our last four meetings, but "The Toffees" did win the preceding two games.
Last season's away game was played in November 2013, finishing 0-0. It was the game in which Hugo Lloris stayed on the pitch, when perhaps he should have gone off as a precaution against concussion. Hugo got jeered by the Gwladys Street End after suffering in a collision with Romelu Lukaku, but heroically carried on and kept a clean sheet. Lloris had to miss the next two games.
This season's home game was also played in November, and finished 2-1 to Spurs, who gave quite a stirring performance. Aaron Lennon played in that game, but of course, he won't feature on Sunday, as he is on loan with Everton, and not permitted to play against us. It is interesting to note that Lennon has scored twice for Everton, so now two clubs have never lost when he scored! Aaron has certainly played more Premier League football for Everton than he did for us this season, and he may yet wear the "Toffees" Blue permanently next season.
Everton had a better season than us in The Europa League, winning their group, and going one round further than us. They had a weak start to the Premier League season, and never got any higher than ninth, and even if they win on Sunday, they cannot finish higher than tenth. Ironically, Everton's worst run of league form came in the winter break from European football, with a run of 8 league and cup games without a win. The "Blues" lost at the first hurdle in both domestic cup competitions, and only became mathematically safe from relegation at the end of April, when they beat Manchester United 3-0.
There is a core of dissatisfied Everton fans, and an anti-Kenwright banner was briefly unfurled last week at Upton Park. Everton have the most partisan of fans, and they will be demanding a win to finish their season. That required win for Spurs will be hard to achieve. If you fancy a bet on this, or any other game, or sport, then this site explains how to understand betting odds.
Everton have lost Leighton Baines now, after he suffered an ankle injury earlier this month. With players such as Steven Pienaar and Darron Gibson also on the injured list, Martinez will have a gap to fill with Lennon's enforced absence. There are no new injury worries for Spurs, with Kyle Walker and Ben Davies known absentees. Emmanuel Adebayor has been allowed to travel home to deal with more family woes.
Of course, it would be great to finish the season on a high, but we would need to show far better form than we have seen in our last 9 games, of which we have won just three, failing to score in five of those games. On the other hand, Everton have won five of their last nine games, scoring in all but one of those games.
Form and a highly partisan home crowd suggests that the desired win is not really on the cards. The best I can hope for is a draw, which means we need Southampton not to win at The Etihad, otherwise we might yet escape Europe. An early goal would of course subdue those Everton fans, and give us a chance!
Sunday's man in the middle will be Cup Final referee Jon Moss, who we last saw at Southampton last month.
