My Kingdom for a point!
In 8 meetings since we won at The City of Manchester Stadium in May 2010 (famously beating City to fourth place and Champions League football), we have managed to beat the new Manchester City just once, at White Hart Lane in April, 2013. That win came with Bale supplying the final goal in a seven minute late blitz, in which we scored all three of our goals. Including the May 2010 win, our record was seven wins in eight games against City. That's how much things have changed in our meetings since Sheik Mansour got his feet under the table, and his cash on it!
We haven't won at the re-named Etihad Stadium in three attempts since Harry Redknapp's side's victory. Last year's result is utterly forgettable (or sadly not) for Spurs, who went down by a horrible 6-0, which started within just 14 seconds. We lost last season's two games 11-1 on aggregate. Nobody in the Premier League did as badly as us. Even the three relegated sides got better aggregate scores, and Cardiff even managed a sensational early season win.
We don't travel with much hope, and as Norman Giller wrote this week, we need to be ready for the "Cold splash of reality". Mauricio Pochettino's first objective must be to at least get a decent performance out of his team. The ideal, of course would be to get a point or more!
So, is there any hope for Spurs? Well, former City boss Mark Hughes' Stoke side managed a 1-0 win early this season, no doubt by packing their defence, but also taking advantage of City's relatively sluggish start to the season, in which they lost 3-0 to Arsenal in the Community Shield, before they did beat Liverpool 3-1.
Sme members of the City squad have travelled far and wide during the International break, with Argentineans Aguero, Demechelis and Zabaleta all involved in the trip to the Far East, where Agentina played Brazil in China and then travelled to Hong Kong. Only Zabaleta played in the second game.
City have a wealth of strength and talent available, of course, but they also have a crucial trip to Moscow, where on Tuesday (at 5pm our time) they will play CSKA, seeking their first win in their Champions League Group, in which they have lost to Bayern Munich, and drawn at home to Roma. Manager Manuel Pellegrini will surely be casting half an eye towards Moscow on Saturday. City will also be very keen to catch and overtake Chelsea, with the news that this season's Premier League Champions will get a place in the exalted Pot One in next year's Champions' League Draw. City finally got through to the knock-out stage of the Blue Riband European event last season, but then lost to Barcelona.
City have already played three of their potential top four rivals, drawing against both Chelsea and Arsenal, and beating Liverpool. Chelsea are already five points ahead, and play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park later on Saturday.
Spurs' form in their last six games has not been good, with only two wins, and also only two goals in their last three games. Nacer Chadli and Hugo Lloris suffered knocks on International duty, and will face tests this week. Lloris is likely to be fit to play, with Chadli more doubtful. Kyle Naughton is likely to be out, following his injury in the southampton game, so Eric Dier will no doubt step in at right back. City are likely to be missing Fernandinho (Hamstring) and Samir Nasri (Groin).
Can Spurs really bring anything back from Manchester tomorrow? Well, I'm leaning on the positive side of the fence, and I'll say that with a performance like the one against Arsenal, we could get a very valuable point. I'll go for a 1-1.
Tomorrow's referee is Jon Moss, who we enjoyed against Aston Villa last season, both away in the Capital One cup, and at home on the last day of the season. We weren't so keen on him when he was in charge for the 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool. On that day, Mr. Moss sent off Paulinho for a chest-high challenge upon Suarez.
This game has been selected for live coverage on BT Sports at 12.45 tomorrow.
