Could there be a better place to go this week?
Reports say that Newcastle fans plan a mass boycott of this Sunday's home game against Tottenham Hotspur. It has been suggested that between 15 and 16,000 fans may stay away (they can watch it on the telly anyway), in protest about the news that their club had £34 million in the bank last summer, which it did not invest in players.
Owner Mike Ashley has always been a target for Newcastle fans, fed up with constant under-achievment. Another derby match loss at Sunderland two weeks ago has not helped moods on Tyneside. That was their fifth consecutive defeat to their hated local rivals.
Alan Pardew used to be a target for the ire of home fans too, but he left for Crystal Palace in January, and since then, "The Toon" have won only two of thirteen games played, with the beleagered John Carver at the helm. Newcastle have lost their last five games, and have only scored twice in their last seven games.
Could there be a better place for Spurs to go at this time? Well, maybe not, but our own current form is not good. We have failed to score in 5 of our last 8 games. We haven't scored in our last two games, which means that Harry Kane hasn't scored, and hasn't won a game as Captain. Kane might be relieved of the armband this week, with both Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen hopefully returning to the team.
Congratulations must again go to Kane, who has been nominated for both the PFA Footballer of the year, and Young Footballer of the year awards
The striker who was ousted by Kane, and who has remained out of favour for several months now is Emmanuel Adebayor, rarely even being included in Poch's 18. It was Adebayor who scored the Spurs goal in our home defeat to Newcastle in October. We took a first half lead, then fell asleep at the start of the second half when Ameobi equalised from the kick-off. Perez scored a 58th minute winner, to take Newcastle out of the bottom three and to give Spurs their third home defeat in their first five home games. That would become four losses out of six, when Stoke came to The Lane in the next league game.
Alan Pardew got Newcastle into the top half, where they stayed at the turn of the year, but with only 9 points gained in this calendar year, they sit on 35 points in thirteenth place, and still have to look over their shoulders, with points still needed for safety. They are two places and seven points behind Pardew's Palace, who were battling relegation when he arrived.
Newcastle have had their injury problems over the course of the season, and currently have to cope without Steven Taylor, who has managed only 7 Premier League starts this season, and none since New Year's Day. Their "enforcer" Cheick Tiote is also a long term absentee with a knee injury. Newcastle will also have to manage on Sunday without one of their best players - Moussa Sissoko, who stupidly got himself a second yellow card late in last week's game against Liverpool.
Spurs' overall Premier Leagaue record against Newcastle is not one of their best, and that applies particularly to our travels to St. James' Park. However, last year, in February, we blitzed them 4-0, with Adebayor getting two of our goals. Paulinho and Chadli completed the rout. (Newcastle 0 Spurs 4 - 12th February, 2014).
Despite losing our last two home league games, we did also beat them 4-0 at home in the Capital One Cup, so we are 9-2 up on aggregate in our last three meetings!
It could be a subdued home atmosphere then in a game which both teams need to win. In both cases there is a need to return to winning form. In Spurs' case there is a need to re-inforce their claim upon a European qualification place. I am predicting Spurs to succeed - 2-0.
Sunday's match referee will be Kevin Friend, who was last in charge of Spurs for their 3-0 win at West Brom in January. That could be a good omen!
· 10 years ago on 16th April, Erik Edman scored his wonder goal at Anfield in a 2-2 draw.
· ...and on 20th April, we drew at home to West Brom.
