It's about remembrance, and victory
Tomorrow has been chosen as the formal date upon which Tottenham Hotspur Football Club will commemorate the tenth anniversary of the passing of its most famous son - Bill Nicholson. There will be an A4 size special programme, and plenty of content about the great man.
Thursday (23rd) was the actual anniversary, and one of Bill's former captains and trophy winners Alan Mullery was interviewed at half-time, and a video montage was displayed upon the Jumbotron, when Asteras Tripolis were our Europa League opponents.
I well remember the feeling of loss and devastation on the day we learnt of Bill Nicholson's death. As I wrote then, I felt I had lost a dear member of the family, and that is how we all feel ten years on.
Newcastle United Football Club have had a more recent loss to contemplate this season, after they tragically lost two of their most loyal and widely travelled fans, who were among the passengers on Flight MH17 which was shot down over Eastern Ukraine. They were John Alder and Liam Sweeney, who will no doubt be remembered by the travelling fans after 17 minutes of tomorrow's game.
On such occasions, football fans everywhere forget rivalries, and are in total unison when sharing grief. Sunderland fans sent messages of condolence that were displayed at St. James' Park. Bolton fans stood in total silence on the day we first mourned Bill Nicholson. We will all stand together tomorrow.
This week, the Spurs family is able to emphasise with Newcastle over the loss of John Alder and Liam Sweeny, because we also lost a long-time loyal, and far-travelling Spurs fan, our club historian Andy Porter. Once again, I am sure you will find his detailed comments within the programme, both about this fixture, and about Bill Nicholson.
For all the talk about remembrance, this game is also about much needed victory for both clubs. Last year's home game was a nasty shock for Spurs, who at the time were led by Andre Villas-Boas. We had already lost a home league game to West Ham, which had been a disaster, but on this occasion, Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul had one of those games when he could do now wrong, and when he was beaten, the woodwork came to his rescue. Newcastle won the game 1-0 with Loic Remy the scorer, after Chiriches and Paulinho between them contrived to give the ball away. Neither of these two Spurs players are likely to be seen in action tomorrow.
Newcastle's current woes are well publicised, of course, and there might be a few home-made banners calling for Alan Pardew's dismissal amongst the away fans.
Whilst Newcastle's form in this calendar year has been that of relegation candidates, they have actually managed one more point than us in their last six games. Last week, they managed their first league win of the season, thanks to Gabriel Obertan's first goal for the club since October 2012. Mind you, Obertan has hardly made a start for his club in those two years.
Newcastle might be in the bottom three, but they top the injury list chart at Physio Room. 6 of the players on the list may be fit to play tomorrow, and they include hard man Tiote in the midfield, and top scorer Papiss Cisse, who is listed as having a knee injury, which must have been a knock, as he played 90 minutes last week. The Geordies will definitely miss Gutierrez, who is fighting testicular cancer, midfielder Siem De Jong, who was signed from Ajaz in the summer, and full back Santon, who definitely does have a knee injury.
Spurs still have Kyle Walker missing. We haven't seen Kyle since March, but have hopes of a return from his pelvic injury in the not too distant future. Kyle Naughton is also out, as is Bentaleb, both with ankle injuries. Fazio has to sit this one out, due to his red card last week, but I am sure Kaboul will play with Vertonghen beside him.
The selection of Adebayor to start Thursday's Europa League tie was interesting, and I'm wondering if Soldado is going to get the nod tomorrow. Call me rash if you like, but I am actually predicting a 4-0 win for Spurs tomorrow, which is the score by which we beat "The Toon" on their patch in February. Spurs fans chanted "even Chadli scored", but he's our top league scorer so far this season.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
Anthony Taylor is the first referee to be in charge of a Spurs game twice this season. He was last in charge for our 4-0 win over QPR. That's a good omen, surely!
