Raw Britannia!
Whilst all of the Football League relegation, and most of its promotion issues have been resolved, the Premier League season trundles on towards its later than usual conclusion with a number of games having lesser meaning.
Chelsea have won the Premier League title, and the rest of the top four places have surely been resolved, although not mathematically. Burnley and QPR are virtually down, which leaves five teams fighting to avoid the final relegation spot.
Spurs still hope to secure a European qualification place, and ideally to finish fifth, to avoid the play-off phases of the Europa League. Stoke are literally in no-man's land, but their manager Mark Hughes will be keen to try and beat last season's best ever Premier League finish of ninth. For that reason, Spurs can be assured of the usual spicy encounter at a "raw" Britannia stadium, whose fans will urge their team on as much as ever.
It is six months to the day since we played Stoke at White Hart Lane. Sadly, the result was our second Premier League home defeat to "The Potters". The result sealed our worst start to a Premier League season since the days of Juande Ramos in 2008, and I expressed grave reservations about Mauricio Pochettino's ability to lead our team. I ate humble pie later in the season, after the euphoria of wins over Chelsea and Arsenal, but in truth, we fans have had little else to truly cheer this season.
Last season's away game was played in April 2014, and Danny Rose did enough to ensure he will be the focus of a lot of anger from the Stoke fans tomorrow. Danny not only scored the solitary goal of the game, but he also had the audacity to be fouled by Stoke skipper Ryan Shawcross, who was shown a second yellow card. I am sure Rose will be looking forward to tomorrow's game with relish.
This will be the 80th league meeting between the two sides, of which Stoke have won just one quarter. They have won four of the 13 Premier League games we have played, and Spurs have actually won more Premier League games away than at home. We've won our last two away games, and we also won in March and October of 2010.
Stoke's recent results have not been good, with only one win in their last seven games, and there is no doubt they have missed their former Barcelona signing Bojan Krkic, who suffered a cruciate knee injury in January. Victor Moses, on loan from Chelsea, will also be missing with a hamstring injury. A man that Spurs fans love to hate, Charlie Adam, has figured prominently recently, with three goals in his last five games, including that amazing goal from his own half against Chelsea.
This time five years ago Peter Crouch scored a historic goal to carry Spurs into the Champions League for the one and only time, but tomorrow (if selected), he will be hoping to score against another old team. Crouch hasn't started in the last four games though, and hasn't scored since Febrary.
Kyle Walker and Ben Davies are our only guaranteed absentees, and the Spurs side is likely to be very similar to that which started against Man City last week. We did create a few opportunities in that game, and if we can play with the same desire but be more clinical, then I'd take us to come away from The Britania Stadium with three points tomorrow. I'll go for yet another 2-1!
Tomorrow's match referee will be Mark Clattenburg, who we last saw at Old Trafford in March. Mr. Clattenburg used to be our bogey man (Think Old Trafford January, 2005), but hasn't been so bad for us in the last two or three seasons. He remains a high profile premier League and European match referee. His most high profile recent game was PSG v Barcelona last month.
· 10 years ago on May 7th Spurs travelled to Middlesbrough hoping for European qualification. They lost 1-0.
