Has there ever been a bigger Premier League NLD?
Has there ever been a bigger Premier League "North" London Derby? (Spurs are of course the only "Proper Norf" London club!). Arsenal fans would lay claim to the match in April 2004, when their team actually secured the Premier League title (the last time they won it) with a 2-2 draw. (Spurs 2 Arsenal 2, 25.04.04).
Vieira and Pires had given the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead, and their fans were already celebrating, despite Spurs clawing back to 2-2 with goals by Jamie Redknapp and a last minute penalty by Robbie Keane. Arsenal had secured the title with four games to play.
There have been famous FA Cup semi-final meetings, of course, but the other and most famous such Derby match was in May 1971, when our hated rivals secured their first League and Cup Double. The first leg of that achievement was at White Hart Lane on a Monday night. It is not a happy memory for Spurs fans, who after all had been the only modern time team to win the sacred Double, but the story of that May 1971 meeting is told here - (Spurs v Arsenal May 3rd, 1971)
Now, with 10 Premier League games to play, Spurs stand three points above Arsenal with a chance to extend that gap, and perhaps finally finish above them in the Premier League for the first time since 1995, and for the first time in Mr. Wenger's reign.
Both teams suffered set-backs in mid-week, but Arsenal's home defeat to Swansea was surely more severe than that of Spurs at Upton Park. Indeed, Arsenal's recent form has not been good, with three consecutive defeats including their 2-0 home defeat to Barcelona. They have also lost three of their last six Premier league games, whilst Spurs suffered their first defeat in 8 league games on Wednesday night.
Both teams have wounds to lick. In Arsenal's case those wounds are more physical, with injuries to Petr Cech and Koscielny being added to the absences of Cazorla (Achilles), Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee), and of course Jack Wilshere, who hasn't played since June last year. He is still 4 weeks away from fitness.
Spurs will be hoping that Mousa Dembele is fit for the Saturday lunch-time game, and also that Dele Alli is fit enough to start this one.
Spurs' form in recent North London Derby league matches has been good. Last season we drew 1-1 away and won 2-1 at home. This season we also drew 1-1 away with arguably our best performance at The Emirates Stadium. Harry Kane gave us a first half lead, but despite dominating the opposition, Kieran Gibbs scored a rare goal in the 77th minute to give the home side a draw. ( Arsenal 1 Spurs 1, 08.11.15)
We'd all be happy if Spurs repeated last season's medicine and won 2-1 tomorrow. Yes folks, that's my prediction! You can get your odd comparisons here.
This will be the fifth time this season that we have been refereed by Michael Oliver. The good news is that we have yet to lose this season with Mr. Oliver in charge. We beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at home; drew with Chelsea and Everton, and beat Colchester in the FA Cup. Only just 31, Mr. Oliver was the youngest ever Premier League referee when appointed in 2010, but he is now a senior referee in status, often given the highest profile matches. Last week he officiated in the Capital One Cup Final, and he regularly takes charge of European and International matches.
