Beware of Selhurst Park in January!
Spurs travel south of the river to Selhurst Park in fourth place on 39 points. Last season we visited a little earlier in January in fifth place with 34 points. Palace were in the relegation zone on 17 points with a new manager Alan Pardew. Pardew turned them on, and led them to Premier League survival. Spurs became Pardew's first league victims of his tenure and lost 2-1. (Palace 2 Spurs 1 - 10.01.15)
This season, Pardew's team started very well, with five wins in their first 8 Premier League games, taking them to fourth place, above Spurs. Palace's most recent league form has been dismal though. They haven't even managed a Premier league goal in their last five games. Their last league win was at Stoke on December 19th. The "Eagles" did make FA Cup progress in an away third round tie at Southampton, winning 2-1.
Four of Palace's last six league games have been away from home, and their fans will be cheering them on as enthusiastically as ever. Spurs have plenty of reason to be wary.
We played Palace away almost on the same day in January 2005 and lost 3-0. (Palace 3 Spurs 0 - 22.01.05). Spurs' top half placing and Palace's 17th place counted for nothing on the day.
A happier January visit to Selhurst Park for Spurs was in 1993, when Teddy Sheringham scored twice, and Andy Gray (no, not that one) scored another. We even scored Palace's goal for them, courtesy of a Neil Ruddock own goal. Future Spur Chris Armstrong was in the Palace side, as was Wales' manager Chris Coleman.
I have often written about perhaps Spurs' most notorious visit to Selhurst Park, which occurred on 28th January, 1970. "Mighty" Spurs lost an FA Cup fourth round replay 1-0 to Palace, who were regarded as Division One minnows, managed by Bert Head. Bill Nicholson's axe fell upon four big-name players - Greaves, Gilzean, Kinnear and Knowles. Steve Perryman was also left out of Spurs' next game, but Nicholson said this was to take the young Perryman out of the line of fire. Greaves never played for Spurs' first team again. Gilzean, Kinnear and Knowles did win back their manager's favour.
Palace's recent loss of league form could be linked with the absence through injury of Yannick Bolasie, who hasn't played since that Palace win at Stoke last month. Bolasie, who has a hip/thigh injury is still a week away from fitness. Bolasie had been a 90 minute man in his last 13 games for club and country.
Mauricio Pochettino is in a strong position, having effectively rested Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dembele, Alli and Kane, all of whom could start on Saturday. The odds are surely in favour of Palace at least breaking their goal-scoring barren spell, but I'll go for a Spurs win (2-1) to ensure that we travelling fans go home feeling "Glad all over".
Match referee Martin Atkinson was in charge when we drew at Arsenal this season, and was also the man in the middle for our previous visit to The King Power Stadium.
Did you know? Chris Foy refereed our 3-0 defeat at Selhurst Park in January 2005. Roger (not Chris) Hoy (not Foy) played for Palace in that January 1970 Cup tie.

· Premier League results 10 years ago this week - we were also in fourth place, with 41 points after a home draw against Aston Villa.
