A "royal" beating would be nice!
It's our first London Derby match since March this year, and a "royal" beating of Crystal Palace is highly desirable. If Spurs can win by two goals they would climb above Palace on goal difference. That task though will be hard to achieve, with Alan Pardew's side in good form and determined not to be "also-rans" in this year's Premier League competition.
Palace's form and rise up the table has been significant since Pardew was appointed in January. Clearly there is a bond and a chemistry between the manager; the players, and the fans at Selhurst Park. Before Pardew's appointment, Palace had won just three league games. However, two of those wins had been real feathers in their caps, as they beat Everton away and Liverpool at home.
Immediately after Pardew's arrival, "The Eagles" soared to four consecutive wins in League and Cup matches, and won 10 of their remaining Premier League games, rising from the relegation zone to twelfth place. Of course, Spurs were one of their victims, losing 2-1 in January. (Crystal Palace 2 Spurs 1 - 10.01.15)
Palace have carried on where they left off, with three wins in their first five games, including a much-heralded 2-1 win at Chelsea. Palace can win there. Why can't we?
Last week, at Selhurst Park, Palace held the early leaders of the Premier League - Manchester City - until added time, and it took an unknown 18 year old substitute Kelechie Iheanacho to deprive them of a share of the points. Poor old Chris Kamara had trouble with the scorer's name on Sky's rolling scores and results programme!
Spurs and Palace have only met 32 times in League competitions, with 12 of those matches in The Premier League. Spurs' record against Palace in Premier League matches is not good enough. We have won four, drawn 5 and lost 3 games, and we only took one point off them last season, drawing our home game 0-0. (Spurs 0 Palace 0 - 06.12.14)
Pardew has re-united with his former Newcastle midfielder, French International Johan Cabaye, signed from PSG this summer. other arrivals have been striker Connor Wickham from Sunderland, and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from QPR. McCarthy has taken over from veteran keeper Julian Speroni, who had been number one at Selhurst Park for 8 of his 11 seasons with the club.
There were already players established at Palace who carry the tag of danger men, such as pace-men Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha. Regarding Zaha, that chemistry factor seems to work for him at Palace since he re-signed from Man Utd.
The Palace squad is deep, and I am sure they will establish themselves as stayers in the Premier League. Another two seasons would see them match their longest ever term in the top flight. With all the Premier League money, perhaps they could see their way to providing decent facilities at Selhurst Park for away fans!
The ever-enthusiastic Palace fans will surely be at The Lane in numbers tomorrow, which should ensure a lively and enhjoyable atmosphere.
A "royal beating" would indeed be nice, but will be most difficult to achieve. Spurs will need to be at their best. Harry Kane will start, after playing just 22 minutes in our mid-week Europa League game. Thankfully, Eric Dier was not included on Spurs' injury list, after he went off following a strong tackle in midfield. Dier is our only available "enforcer". He may yet be re-inforced by the return of Ryan Mason, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele, who will all be assessed closer to the game.
Tomorrow, we'll see the return of Spurs' current first choice defence. Kyle Walker and Ben Davies (currently preferred to Danny Rose) will have their work cut out with the pace men, whilst Toby Alderweirled and Jan Vertonghen will need to be strong in the middle. I suspect we'll see Heung-min Son, Eriksen/Alli, and Chadli behind Harry Kane.
I've predicted a 2-1 win for Spurs, but I am not counting on success, much as a win is required, with Man City coming to town next week.
Tomorrow's match referee will be Michael Oliver, who we last saw for our 3-2 win over Swansea in March. Mr. Oliver is kept busy, and refereed Fiorentina's home match against Basel on Thursday. He sent off a Fiorentina player, and has already brandished 6 red cards in all his domestic and European games so far. Stoke suffered most when they had two players sent off in their 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.
