No nasty shocks please!

Newcastle came to White Hart Lane for a league match last October with Alan Pardew still in charge. The "Toon" were in the bottom three then, as they are for this year's visit. Pardew's team gave us a nasty shock with their second successive league win at The Lane. Adebayor scored his last goal for us in almost his last league start for us, but Spurs were asleep at the start of the second half when substitute Sammy Ameobi levelled the scores just 8 seconds into the half. Perez sealed the win in the 58th minute. We want no such nasty shocks this year!

We have played Newcastle 140 times in league matches in three divisions of league football. The record so far is 60 wins for Spurs, 30 draws, and 50 wins for Newcastle.Newcastle just have the upper hand in Premier League meetings, but not so much in recent years, although the record stands at 3-3 in our last 6 league meetings. However, in that time, we have beaten them 4-0 away and 3-1 away in our last two trips, whilst we beat them 4-0 at home in a League Cup fifth round game last year. In February 2012, Harry Redknapp's Spurs beat Newcastle 5-0, with Louis Saha scoring two! Adebayor was on the scoresheet that day too!

Despite arriving in the bottom three again, Steve McLaren's team are in better spirits following their 2-0 win over Liverpool last week in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. A degree of luck was on their side, as Skrtel put Wijnaldum's cross/shot into his own net. Liverpool then had a good goal wrongly disallowed for offside, before Wijnaldum did score in the closing minutes, as Klopp's side chased the game.

Newcastle's recent run includes a soul-destroying sixth successive league defeat to Sunderland, and a 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace led by their own former manager Pardew. Morale has not been good up on Tyneside, but has been boosted in time for this game.

Newcastle know they will face the now renowned Spurs "high press" this week. They should have had some practice against Liverpool last week, but Klopp's men did not perform as well as had been expected.

Monaco had enough trouble against a Spurs side which was resting the following players:- Walker, Vertonghen, Rose, Alli, Dembele (not available today), Eriksen and Kane. Eric Dier went off after 40 minutes, but should be okay tomorrow. Hat-trick hero Erik Lamela went off after an hour. Clinton N'Jie is also out today with knee problem.

Spurs are therefore ever so fresh and ready for Premier League action in front of Sky's 4pm cameras. Newcastle do have one of the longest injury lists in the Premier League with absentees including goalkeeper Tim Krul, Mike Williamson, Cheick Tiote, Massadio Haidara, Jamaal Lascelles, Gabriel Obertan, Steven Taylor and Emmanuel Riviere. No wonder they've had such struggles!

I'm taking nothing for granted but I do predict a good win for Spurs. I've opted for a 3-0. Those on the Spurs bench will be eager to get on for some of the action too! Thanks to Bournemouth's 2-1 win over Man Utd, Spurs will go fourth today with a win. Do your job Spurs!

Today's match referee will be Roger East, aged 50. Mr East was only appointed to the Premier League panel two years ago, but first took charge of a Premier League game in September, 2012. We have seen this referee twice. Mr. East officiated in our away FA Cup draw against Burnley in January, and this season was in charge when we beat Bournemouth 5-1 away!

· Did you know? - Spurs first played Newcastle (in an FA Cup game) in February 1905. It took us 9 attempts in all league and cup meetings to record our first victory. That was a 1-0 home win in November 1912, thanks to a Jimmy Cantrell goal. We played another seven games before winning again. This time it was 2-0 in December 1920, with goals by Bert Bliss and Jimmy Dimmock. Spurs had drawn 1-1 on Christmas Day at St. James' Park. Those were the days!
