Spurs lined up with Glover in goal behind Maghoma and Walkes with Mukena replacing the injured Muscatt at right back and Tsaroulla on the left. Marsh anchored the midfield with Stylianides while Goddard flanked by Tracey on his right and Georgiou on his left supported Sterling up front.
Spurs defended the East end and sought to attack the Japan side with Goddard drawing a save from Wakino from a Georgiou pass early on. Yamura headed over at the far post from a cross from the left. Yamura scored with a dipping shot over Glover having been played in by Nakamura.
Makino won a corner with cross shot from which Hoshi headed wide. Spurs began to get back into the game as the half ended with Walkes playing in Goddard for a chance that was saved.
Spurs made two changes for the second half with Roles replacing Goddard and Oteh on for Tracey playing on the left with Georgiou switching to the right. Spurs continued to put pressure on the Japan side with Sterling having an effort blocked and Roles following up saw his header saved.
Japan increased their lead when they got down the right and when the ball was pulled back Hatate hit the far post with a low drive and Nakamura scored from the rebound.
Spurs sent on Dinzeyi for Marsh to go into the back four with Walkes moving into midfield. Glover saved from Nakamura and Hatate fired wide before Bennetts replaced Georgiou. Almost immediately the wide man made a run into the area but was fouled just outside according to the referee who booked the defender. Roles hit the free kick over the bar. Japan were looking to kill off the game which saw the keeper booked for time wasting.
A free kick saw Dinzeyi head wide and Glover saved from Sugioka before Spurs scored. Sterling forced a save from Wakino with Oteh scoring from the rebound. Substitute Torikai drew a save from Glover as Japan saw out time to finish the group stage unbeaten.

The referee gave Fortuna a free kick for a dive by the Spurs striker who had to be replaced by Sterling because of the injury he received in the challenge.

Spurs replaced Tracey with Marsh as they sought to strengthen their defence. Sterling was fouled as he tried to break through with the defender being booked. Mukena headed over when a corner was not cleared and to help run the clock down Spurs made two more changes. Oteh replaced Bennetts and Goddard took over from Roles.
