What, if anything, shall we call this day?
So here we are then. Yesterday, at last, the club made the formal announcement to confirm that we play our home games at Wembley next season, which means this 50th Premier League meeting with Arsenal will be our last at the current White Hart Lane. This game will also be our 160th league meeting with our rivals who for most have those games have been living down the other end of The Seven Sisters Road. The statistics say that throughout those years and throughout the Premier League years, the "Woolwich Nomads" (as my good friend Norman Giller likes to call them) have enjoyed superiority, but at last this season, things will surely be different.
Three points tomorrow will mean that Spurs will at last have confirmed a Premier League finish above their near rivals for the first time in 22 years and the first time in the Wenger era. Mr Wenger has been quick to seek to deflect criticism and no doubt to pacify Arsenal fans by pointing out that that one year in 20 does not indicate a power shift, and of course he is right. It will be a great feeling though! Whatever happens tomorrow, Spurs will surely finish above them this season, with another four games to follow this one.
I suppose Mr. Wenger is only responding to press questions, but he also chose to stick his oar in about how difficult it will be for Spurs firstly to play next season at Wembley, and then to settle in to their new stadium, along with the associated financial restraint necessary regarding spending on new players. The Arsenal manager forgets how well Spurs have done over recent years without splashing the cash that their rivals (including Arsenal) have spent. Somehow, Wenger has also been drawn into the rights and wrongs of gambling, no doubt after Joey Barton's 18 month ban this week. The Arsenal manager has declared all forms of gambling evil, decrying big money lottery winners as well. This man seems to want to spoil everybody's fun!
Mauricio Pochettino chooses not to put his nose into the affairs of his rivals, but instead to focus upon winning and achieving his own targets - to ideally pip Chelsea and at least to confirm Champions League qualification. For "Poch" beating Arsenal is important (he and the players do realise what it means to the fans), but he does not put that objective above the broader, and more important issues.
I suspect it is by design that Spurs will finish their home programme at the 118 year old stadium with two of the biggest home games of any season. The club have a special day lined up for the visit of Manchester United on May 14th. The crowd will make it a special day for what will hopefully be a humdinger of a match tomorrow.
As Spurs have proved in the past when form and league position have not always been an indicator regarding the performance and result, Arsenal, despite their mercurial recent form, could provide determined and testing opposition. They have had, and continue to have their injury problems with Mustafi and Cazorla definitely absent. Koscielny is described as having a "60-40" chance of playing. Wenger even recently tried playing three at the back, which was a massive change for him after many years of not using that strategy. That three has included 21 year old Rob Holding, signed last summer from Bolton, who made his first Premier League start of 2017 in the 2-1 win at Middlesbrough. Of course, Wenger's big problem has not so much been injuries, but the form of his players. Rest assured they will be fired up tomorrow.
Spurs have a new injury problem, with Mousa Dembele facing late assessment today regarding his match fitness. Michel Vorm has returned to training and will probably be Hugo's deputy tomorrow. Danny Rose may not be quite ready, but his return is surely closer.
"Poch" will adapt to whatever situation he faces. The 4-1-4-1 in the second half at Selhurst Park worked well. If he chooses 4 at the back, then Eric Dier could play beside Wanyama. The home crowd will be an essential "12th man".
Spurs Odyssey has reported on numerous home matches against Arsenal over the last 18 years, but never on a season when we have finished above them. In those years memorable home games have been the November 1999 2-1 win; the November 2004 4-5 defeat; the January 2008 5-1 League Cup win; Danny Rose's glorious debut goal in April 2010, and goals by Jenas, Walker, Rafa van der Vaart, Harry Kane and more. We've had four draws and one win in a run of five league meetings unbeaten, but the last league defeat was at The Lane in March 2014.
For all the history associated with our club and this fixture, the next match is always the most important and a win tomorrow will not only ensure we finish above Arsenal, but will leave us one win away from guaranteeing second place. Who knows? Everton may get a result against Chelsea before us, and in truth whatever happens at Goodison we will be playing for so much more than gloating rights in the local derby.
Arsenal fans used to celebrate "St. Totteringham's Day". What, if anything, shall we call this day? Arsenfall, or Arsenfail perhaps. The most important thing is to win the game and remain the only realistic Premier League title challenger! I am predicting a 2-1 win for Spurs.
We saw referee Michael Oliver only two weeks ago when we beat Bournemouth 4-0. This will be Mr. Oliver's sixth game in charge of Spurs this season, four of which have been wins for Spurs. Arsenal haven't seen him so much this season, and last time out was their 3-0 defeat at Selhurst Park. A repeat would be fine!
