Almost the last thing they want!
Whilst Swansea and their fans will no doubt be looking forward to their Saturday tea-time Wembley date, almost the last thing Paul Clement's men want is to play Spurs, who this week have hit top form, and who have an unbeaten Premier League record against the Welsh team.
After a late burst of form with 4 wins in their last five games last season (when new Spurs signing Fernanado Llorente scored 4 goals), Swansea's woes have continued this season with two home defeats - firstly a 4-0 beating by Manchester United, and then last week a 1-0 loss to Newcastle. Now they have to face Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs, whose morale is in great shape after the 3-0 win at Goodison Park last week, and the mid-week Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.
Llorente did not feature for "The Swans" this season before his move, so clearly a move was very much on the cards, although as he has stated this week, Chelsea were very keen but he was persuaded by the "Spurs project" under Pochettino. With Harry Kane on such good form and having scored two goals in each of the last two games, Llorente can only hope for some game time against his old team from the bench. He will get a start against Barnsley on Tuesday, surely. Llorente himself has said about Harry this week that "In front of goal he’s lethal – in every aspect, he’s very complete", describing him as one of the best strikers in the world.
Harry scored twice in our 5-0 win over Swansea at White Hart Lane last December. Son Heung-min also scored, and Christian Eriksen hit the net twice. All three men are in top form at this time, which can be said for most of the Spurs team. Fernanando Llorente was a second half substitute for the "Swans" in that white Hart Lane game, but could do nothing to help stem the Spurs tide.
On a Wednesday night in April this year, Spurs had one of their most dramatic late wins at The Liberty Stadium, winning 3-1 with late goals by Dele Alli (88), Son (90+1) and Eriksen (90+4). Swansea fans must have thought that ex-Spur Routledge's 11th minute goal was going to give them a rare win, but their hopes were dashed. Llorente missed that game.
Spurs have amassed 32 points from their 12 Premier League games against Swansea with an average of 2.666 points per game.
There was a lot of hype last week (particularly on BBC Radio Five Live) about Swansea's loan signing from Bayern Munich - 20 year old Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanchez. (I just discovered that Renato shares my birthday, although his is 45 years after mine - and that of Ricky Villa!). Renato went off after 69 minutes, and will need time to settle into the standard of the Premier League. It would seem he is not the player to fill the gap left by the £45 million departure of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton.
"The Swans" have re-signed Wilfried Bony, after his unsuccessful venture with Man City and on loan to Stoke, and theye have also signed Sam Clucas, who played against us for Hull in that 7-1 away thrashing on the last day of last season. Clucas spent one successful season with Chesterfield (where I now live) in the 2014-15 season before being snapped up by Hull, who were a Championship side then, before their one-season return last year.
We are likely to see two other ex-Spurs tomorrow - Kyle Naughton and Tom Carroll. Naughton's Sheffield mate (Kyle Walker) has gone, but Carroll was more or less a contemporary of Kane, having played in the same Spurs team at various levels. As an example, I found an under 18s' game from November nearly 8 years ago when they both played for Spurs against MK Dons. Spurs won 6-0. Harry Kane was the 16 year old Captain of the side, and scored two goals - one a penalty, and Tom Carroll scored too!
Dele Alli hadn't surfaced for Milton Keynes then, but he will return tomorrow, having had an enforced midweek rest. Mauricio's biggest selection quandary will be at right back. Serge Aurier had a terrific debut against Dortmund, but Kieran Trippier will be keen to get back. Perhaps we can look forward to the debut of Juan Foyth on Tuesday night?
It's a little early for team news, but I don't anticipate any other than the Wanyama, Lamela and Rose situations for us. Georges-Kevin Nkoudou might be ready, but again, I'd expect him to be considered for Barnsley. Swansea will certainly be without Ki Sung-yong and Nathan Dyer, but the latter hasn't played since February due to an achilles injury.
I am feeling very confident about this game, and have predicted a 3-0 home win!
There is, of course, a full programme of Premier League and Football League matches this week-end, starting with a Friday night game between Bournemouth and Brighton. Why not look to see if there is a freebet for you?
This will be match referee Mike Dean's first game in charge of Spurs this season. We haven't seen him in the middle since January for an FA Cup win over Aston Villa, which seems a very long time for us not to see this most experienced official. In my view, Mr. Dean has very rarely harmed Spurs, and he has veen been suspected of Spurs leanings, with a video clip appearing to show him celebrating a Spurs goal a few years ago, whilst officiating! It might have been a trick of the camera:) So far this season, Mr Dean has had charge of the Arsenal-Leicester game (4-3) and Bournemouth v Man City (1-2), when he controversially sent off Raheem Sterling for a second yellow card when over-celebrating a last gasp winner.
