A first for Arsenal

There will only be a maximum of 2,000 fans in our new stadium tomorrow, but this will be Arsenal's first visit to The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where fans will be present. They were allowed fans for their Europa League game on Thursday and it was a surprise they didn't record a full house! Last season's game was played in July which was post-lockdown and under "Project restart". Spurs won 2-1 with goals by Heung-min Son and an 81st minute winner by Toby Alderweireld. Toby scored against Arsenal in his first season at Spurs in a 2-2 home draw in March 2016. Hopefully, Toby is going to be available tomorrow.

As I live in a Tier 3 area, I am not permitted to travel, so it will be a while yet before I can enjoy the stadium experience. To be honest, I'll only enjoy "being there" when we can have the full match experience.

I hope you will forgive me for bringing this up, but I've been wondering when we last met Arsenal with such a big gap between us in terms of places, with Spurs on top, of course. Bearing in mind this is Arsenal's worst 10-game start to a season since 1985, I imagine it is a long time. I happened upon this episode of the Spurs Odyssey archives earlier this week when the gap between our two teams was reversed. After our home game on 25th April 2004, we were sixteenth and (ahem) Arsenal were above us. Before that game, we were fourteenth and they were top, which is the reverse of the current situation. Let's hope their situation can deteriorate this week too!

THFC would not allow me the fly the Spurs Odyssey flag in the stadium for these behind closed doors games but it will feature in my match report!

Arsenal might have waltzed their way into the Europa League Round of 32 (we have succeeded, but more arduously), but their league form has been simply atrocious. They've lost three consecutive home games. The last of these was against Wolves last week when David Luiz had that horrific clash of heads with Raul Jimenez. Jimenez had to go to hospital and required an operation on a fractured skull. David Luiz played on but was replaced at half-time. He might be able to face us. Spurs fans might be grateful!

Other home defeats came against Leicester and Aston Villa. Arsenal have failed to score in four of their last six league games. Their only goals have been an Aubameyang penalty at Old Trafford and Gabriel's header last Sunday against Wolves. Arsenal's win at Old Trafford was remarkable, especially as they scored a penalty and not that man Fernandes! Despite their recent underwhelming league form our local rivals must not, of course, be under-estimated.

The Gabriel who scored last week against Wolves was 22-year-old Brazilian centre-back Gabriel dos Santos who Arsenal signed from Lille in the summer. They have another Gabriel - also a Brazilian - but this is Martinelli, who is out until the New Year. Arsenal's biggest summer signing was that of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid for £45m. Partey suffered a thigh injury recently and along with David Luiz is facing a late fitness test for this game. Record signing Pepe is suspended following his recent sending-off at Leeds.

Willian was signed on a free from Chelsea, but of course he's on big money. He hasn't been showing the greatest of form when selected recently either. Lacazette has not been first choice too often either, but he scored on Thursday night and his partnership with Aubameyang might be re-ignited tomorrow.

Spurs have not yet issued team news, but there is a worry about Hugo Lloris over an undisclosed problem, which has led to rumours of him being affected by Covid-19. The fact that Joe Hart could get a first Premier League start for Spurs has caused jitters among Spurs fans who were not impressed by Joe's overall performance on Thursday night in Austria. At the time of writing there is no certainty about the availability of Alderweireld, Reguilon or Harry Kane. Joe Rodon will be in the wings if Alderweireld does not make it. My gut feeling is that Reguilon and Kane will be there! I've already posted my prediction for the game, so despite the goalkeeper worry, I'll stick with my 2-0 for Spurs. One first is enough for Arsenal, thank you.

Did you know? - 20-year-old centre-back Jonathan Dinzeyi left Spurs and joined Arsenal on a professional contract in August. Dinzeyi had been released by Spurs and had not featured in a senior game. Dinzeyi is expected to be part of Arsenal's under-23 squad.

One piece of bad news about the match referee is not the fact that it is Martin Atkinson, but that he was our referee for our one Premier League defeat of the season so far, which was also a home game on Matchday one against Everton. This will be Mr. Atkinson's 44th game in charge of Spurs.
