Spurs to climb six places?

The big advantage of waiting till 8 o'clock tonight to see our team is the knowledge that an away win will lead to Spurs climbing six places to fifth and in touch with the early leaders of the Premier League. Once again there have been some surprising results over the weekend, with leaders Everton losing at Southampton, and Aston Villa losing their 100% record at home to Leeds. Finally (ahem) the team from the wrong end of the Seven Sisters Road were beaten last night by Leicester. I'll offer a note of caution however. It would not be a surprise result if Burnley won tonight, but Jose Mourinho has the resources available to come away from Lancashire with all three points.

Our match at Turf Moor on March 7th was the last time Spurs fans were allowed into a stadium to watch football here in England. The attendance was 20,496 and the game followed our FA Cup defeat at home to Norwich when Eric Dier had climbed into the stand to address someone apparently abusing his brother. Burnley fans showed no sympathy and chanted, "Eric Dier – your brother’s a tw*t". This was repeated several times, and the RESPECT notice on the Burnley scoreboard had fallen on deaf ears.

Burnley v Spurs, 07.03.20

Jose Mourinho and the team were suffering poor results and difficult circumstances with a trip to Leipzig to follow where we hoped to rescue a 1-0 deficit. That Leipzig trip was our last before lockdown, and the last game when we fans could attend elite football. As a result of the need to try and preserve some resources, Jose held Lo Celso on the bench until the second half. Our Argentinian playmaker inspired us to level the scores with a penalty scored by Dele Alli. That was Dele's 50th Premier League goal. He hasn't yet added to his league tally, but these days he is fighting for a place in our starting line-up. Harry Kane and Heung-min Son were among our absentees, and will surely be the first names on the team-sheet tonight.

The Burnley side we face in tonight's game will not differ much from that we played in March. Sean Dyche had to negotiate the post-lockdown period without players whose contracts were ending and were seemingly not being renewed. Aaron Lennon was one player who left. He had only come on in our game for the last minute and that was his last Burnley appearance. Aaron is now playing in Turkey for Kayserispor.

Among the other departures were Joe Hart and midfielder Jeff Hendrick who has gone to Newcastle. Dyche has a justifiable gripe regarding the Burnley recruiting process and their only arrivals have been midfielder Dale Stephens from Brighton and a back-up goalkeeper Will Norris from Wolves. Stephens was born in Bolton and his first clubs were Bury and Oldham before he moved south to Charlton then Brighton in 2014. He made over 200 league appearances for the "Seagulls" including 98 in the Premier League over the last three years.

Burnley have also signed a 19-year-old midfielder - Anthony Gomes Mancini - from Angers in France, but he has yet to appear.

Burnley's opening game of this season was postponed to allow opponents Man Utd a little more time after their Europa League semi-final in August. It does not look as if there will be a place in the calendar for this game to played this year. As a result this is only Burnley's second home league game, and they are looking for their first home win of the season, and a first league win. The only game they have won was at Millwall in the League Cup. Burnley were subsequently beaten at home by Man City in that tournament.

Joe Hart spent two seasons on loan with Burnley but only made Premier League appearances in the 2018-19 season, including a 1-0 defeat to Spurs at Wembley courtesy of a 90th minute Eriksen goal.

We've only played Burnley 12 times in the Premier League. Our points per game average is two, which is one of the best against current Premier League opponents. We've lost two of the away games and the first of those was Gareth Bale's last game at Turf Moor. That game followed our marvellous victory at the Etihad Stadium which gave us our first entry to the Champions League. My headline was "From Master-class to Master-Farce!" as goals by Bale and Modric had given us a 2-0 lead before we collapsed and lost 4-2. Burnley were already going down, but they enjoyed their end of season party.

As a point of interest, it is amazing to recall that Fulham had a Europa League Final to play the following Wednesday against Atletico Madrid. Managed by Roy Hodgson, Fulham only lost in extra-time 2-1 and their goal was scored by former Spur Simon Davies. The Atletico side included David De Gea and Sergio Aguero, both of whom would move to different clubs in Manchester a year later.

Whether Gareth Bale will start tonight remains to be seen, but I am sure he will be involved. I'd like Lo Celso to start, but it is so difficult to second-guess Jose's selection with the riches available. The Ben Davies experiment as centre-back worked well on Thursday, and he could play again, next to a fresh Toby Alderweireld.

Burnley have the aerial threat and potency of Chris Wood, and the skill of Dwight McNeil on the left wing. It won't be easy, but I am going for a 2-1 Spurs win. I'd like us to score more, and to gain a clean sheet, but we haven't managed that away in the league since January. I am however looking forward to Monday Night Football on Sky!

Michael Oliver's first game in charge of Spurs was a 3-0 FA Cup win against Charlton in January 2011. This will be his 39th game in the middle with Spurs. Spurs Odyssey's post match surveys have captured every one of Mr. Oliver's performances over that period, and he averages a respectable 5.85. Mr. Oliver's last game in the middle with Spurs was our 2-1 win over Arsenal in July.
