Spurs have to spoil Brentford's fairy-tale sequence

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

Sitting in 12th place on 39 points and with five wins in their last six games, Brentford can say they are having a fantastic first Premier League season, and they can look forward to season number two with confidence. This recent run of form has more or less coincided with Christian Eriksen's first appearance for the club after he was signed at the end of the January transfer window.

Christian's story is legend and his return to a top class playing career is only one of two fairy-tales related to Brentford whose venue since 2020 has been "The Community Stadium". The club has a genuine community spirit too from the very top level to the bottom. The happy relationship between manager Thomas Frank, his team and the fans has been evident throughout this season which started so wonderfully when they beat Arsenal in their first game on Friday 13th August.

There are a number of Danish connections at Brentford which made the club a natural home for Eriksen's rehabilitation to playing. The manager is Danish as are seven other squad members, all of whom have made Premier League appearances this season. The most prominent of Eriksen's new colleagues are midfielders Mathias Jensen and Christian Norgaard.

Christian Eriksen came off the bench in the 52nd minute against Newcastle in February, thus making his first competitive appearance since his collapse in the Denmark v Finland Euro 20 game last summer. The player he replaced was Mathias Jensen, who had taken Eriksen’s place when that International game re-started after Eriksen had gone to hospital. The following week (in March this year) Christian made his first start (against Norwich) in a game refereed by Anthony Taylor, who had been the man in the middle when Eriksen suffered his heart attack.

Spurs have won once in 30 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge (On April Fools' Day, 2018) whereas Brentford won on their first such visit on April 2nd this year. In a remarkable piece of history Christian Eriksen scored in both games. Eriksen’s fairy-tale comeback continued, and I am sure Spurs fans will regale him with the "He’s our number 23" song tomorrow. Apart from his goal, Christian has also made two assists in Brentford's recent run. He has added to the 51 Premier League goals he scored for Spurs and to the 62 assists for Spurs. Finally, he was not only selected to play again for his country last month, but also scored in each of their friendly games against the Netherlands and Serbia.

There will be no time for sentiment on the pitch tomorrow and Spurs will need to be at their very best (unlike last week) to get the result they need to keep a hold on fourth place and maintain this challenge for The Champions League. By the time we play (5.30pm on SKY tomorrow), Arsenal will have played and possibly beaten Manchester United at lunchtime. The Brentford "Bees" are buzzing and top goalscorer Ivan Toney is on top form with 8 of his 12 league goals scored in his last 9 such games. Toney also has 4 assists in the league.

Antonio Conte knows Christian Eriksen all too well, of course, having been in charge at Inter during Christian's time there after leaving Spurs. In his press conference yesterday, Antonio said there were no changes regarding injuries, which means Doherty, Tanganga and Oliver Skipp are our absentees. Oliver Skipp still has a big smile, because this week he signed a new contract which takes him to June 2027. I send my congratulations to this fellow Hertfordshire-born young man!

I think Brentford will play quite relaxed and fairly open football, which should allow Spurs to counter with the style we have been used to be watching. My prediction is for a 2-1 away win.

Did you know? - Allan Cockram is a former Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford footballer, and was subject to this excellent and heart-warming story in the Guardian last month.

The match referee was Martin Atkinson and not Andre Marriner as previously published.
