It's a tough prospect
This is matchday nine of this season's Premier League. already, Spurs have played four London derby matches (including Watford). They've lost their last three by bad margins to Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal respectively. Whilst we go into this game above West Ham there is not really any doubt which of the two teams has the best recent form, higher morale and confidence levels to match. "The Hammers" and their fans will be crowing before the game, and I fear quite possibly afterwards.
You can understand why Nuno wanted to leave the team that beat Newcastle last week at home, while the B team travelled (not that far) over the water to The Netherlands, but performed inadequately. Quite frankly, the whole situation surely leaves the Spurs squad, and certainly the team's fans in a state of low morale and confidence.
West Ham's team at Goodison Park last week was Fabianski; Johnson, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Soucek (sub Dawson), Rice; Bowen (sub Yarmolenko), Benrahma (sub Lanzini), Fornals; Antonio.
Their team for their 3-0 home win against Genk was Areola; Johnson, Dawson, Diop, Cresswell (sub Fredericks); Soucek, Rice (sub Noble); Yarmolenko, Lanzini (sub Chesters), Vlasic (sub Fornals; Bowen (sub Benrahma)
Thus David Moyes made 6 changes to his side, and replaced Creswell and Rice for the last quarter of a game they won comfortably with a good performance and a balanced squad. In my view, Nuno should have done the same against Vitesse. Moyes was rewarded last summer with a new three-year contract to remain as West Ham United's manager. His contract now runs till June 2024.
Summer signings included Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola who joined from Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan.
West Ham have an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of his loan. The 28-year-old, a FIFA World Cup winner with France in 2018, made 36 Premier League appearances on loan at Fulham last season. He also claimed nine clean sheets.
Other signings were Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma, signed for £29+, Croatian attacking midfielder Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow, and Czech Republic international Alex Kral on a season-long loan from Spartak Moscow. Bearing in mind the success of Soucek and Coufal, Moyes seems to be "farming" East Europe with some success. Tomas Soucek has undergone plastic surgery to repair the facial injury he suffered against Everton at Goodison Park last Sunday. Soucek was accidentally struck in the face by Salomon Rondon’s studs, leaving him with severe cuts around his eye, lip and nose. Soucek played on Thursday and will face us tomorrow.
Before last season, the last time West Ham finished above Spurs was 2007-08. Both teams finished on the same number of points in 2008-09, but we had the better goal difference. West Ham finished fourth from bottom in 2009-10, then bottom the following year.
With their 2-1 win in our last meeting at The London Stadium West Ham finally achieved parity, at least in the 25 home games they have played against us in the Premier League.
In last season's game at White Hart Lane "The Hammers" became the first team to avoid defeat in a PL match having trailed by three or more goals as late as the 81st minute in the 3-3 draw at Spurs on 18 October.
Had he been alive, Ron Greenwood, who managed West Ham between April 1961 and August 1975, would have reached the age of 100 on November 11th 2021. Greenwood never played for "The Hammers" but played for three London clubs - Brentford, Chelsea and Fulham. Most of his appearances were for "The Bees".
West Ham know full well our team for tomorrow, but in truth, the same aplies to Spurs. My head tells me the home side will succeed. My heart led me to predict a 2-2 draw. I'll be there.
Did you know? - Three years ago, Spurs won a fifth successive London Derby for the first time since the double season. West Ham were our opponents. (Watford are excluded from that stat)
Referee Paul Tierney is in charge of Spurs for the second time already this season. His previous game in the middle for us was also a London Derby. That was our home defeat against Chelsea. Let's hope he does better this time! For good measure, Mr Tierney also refereed the Arsenal v Chelsea game. He's a high profile man these days, having taken charge of this season's Community Shield and the recent Liverpool v Manchester City game.
