Now we come to the crux

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

It's crunch time in Group D of the Champions League tomorrow. With Sporting hosting Marseille to whom they lost 4-1 last week and Spurs hosting Eintracht, any one of the four teams could be top of the table at the end of this round of games!

Antonio Conte has said during the last week that he needs the New White Hart Lane crowd to be as noisy and supportive as were the Frankfurt fans throughout our goalless away draw. Let's hope we can raise the roof and see a winning performance on the pitch.

Wins in their remaining two home games would surely put Spurs in a qualifying position for next year's Round of 16. However, beating this German side is going to be no easier than last week, and I suspect the nature of the game will be similar.

On Saturday, Eintracht suffered a surprising 3-0 away defeat to bottom club VfL Bochum, who had managed just five goals in their previous 8 league games. Bochum remained bottom but Eintracht dropped to eighth place. the Eintracht team was Trapp (c) - Jakic (Chandler 46'), Tuta, Ndicka, Pellegrini (Lenz 78') - Dina Ebimbe, Sow (Rode 60') - Lindström (Alidou 78'), Götze (Kamada 61') - Alario, Borre and they were missing Buta (knee), Kolo Muani (suspended), Onguene (groin), Toure (muscular). The Eintracht starting line-up had five changes after our game, so perhaps coach Oliver Glasner was focussing on tomorrow's crucial match.

There is good news on the injury front as in his press conference today, Antonio Conte said:- "Deki (Kulusevski) started a little part of the training session with us, but he’s not available for tomorrow. Lucas is available despite only having three training sessions with us, but tomorrow he is with us and will be on the bench, There are no other problems, no other injuries."

I am hoping to see us win, perhaps by the odd goal in three. The game kicks off at 8pm, and inthe UK, can be seen on BT SPORT.

Tomorrow's game will be preceded by a moment of appreciation for both Gian Piero Ventrone and former striker John Duncan, both of whom passed away last week. John Duncan made his Spurs debut in October, 1974 in a 1-1 away draw gainst Luton. In his second game, at Stoke, he scored both our goals in another drawn match against a side which included former Spur Jimmy Robertson, and the likes of Alan Hudson and Geoff Hurst. John scored the last of his 53 league goals for Spurs in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in August, 1978. John moved to Derby and scored against us in October, 1978.

Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande and his fellow on-field officials are from Spain. Senor Cerro Grande has refereed Spurs twice before. In November 2019, he was in charge of our 4-0 away win against Crvena Zvezda (Rred Star Belgrade) when Son scored two of our goals and the others were scored by Lo Celso and Eriksen. That was Mauricio Pochettino's penultimate game in charge and his last win for Spurs. Later the same season, Senor Cerro Grande was in charge of our away defeat to Leipzig, which was our last game before Covid lockdown was imposed in the UK.
