Will it be fun in the "Foxes" lair?

Leicester v Spurs, 19.01.22

When we played Leicester in September, the nation was in mourning for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Spurs were third in the league and unbeaten. Leicester were looking for their first league win of the season and lay bottom of the table. Brendan Rodgers’ men got that elusive first win a week later when they beat Nottingham Forest 4-0. After that game, Forest manager Steve Cooper was awarded a new contract. Forest recently won the return game against Leicester 2-0 and sit three points above them before this week’s games.

Our 6-2 home win followed a defeat away to Sporting when our recent signing Pedro Porro had played impressively against us. He will be hoping to make his debut in tomorrow’s game which kicks off at 3pm and is not one of our televised games this weekend. However, Emerson Royal might take some shifting after last week’s titanic performance against Jack Grealish. Richarlison had been given his second league start against Leicester but was replaced by Heung-min Son who scored a super hat-trick to make it a rout. Son has added just one more league goal since that game but did hit form at Preston in the FA Cup. Richarlison has two Champions League goals to his name for Spurs but has yet to score for us in the Premier League. Mind you, he has only made 5 starts and played 487 minutes.

It was Harry Kane who scored first for Spurs that day, and he has scored more goals against Leicester than against any other team in Premier League meetings. (18 goals in 15 games) Four of those goals came in the sensational 6-1 away win at The King Power Stadium in the penultimate game of the 2016-17 season.

Our 6-2 home win was the same score as the final day of the 1964-65 season on 24 April 1965. That day Cliff Jones had a hat-trick, Jimmy Greaves scored two including a penalty and Gilzean was the other scorer. By scoring his hat-trick, man of the match Heung-min Son overtook Gilzean to become equally our eighth highest goalscorer. "Sonny" has since overtaken George Hunt to become number seven on the list now headed by Kane. Cliff Jones is another esteemed member of our top ten scorers and this week celebrated his 88th birthday. Son needs five more goals to overtake Jermain Defoe and 21 to overtake Cliff.

In 119 competitive meetings with Leicester there have been six games where one side scored six goals. The first two were in Leicester’s favour in 1927 and 1935. The four most recent have been achieved by Spurs since 1959.

Spurs have won the last four games at home and away against "The Foxes". Kane has scored in each of those games and of course we won’t forget last January’s 3-2 win when Steven Bergwijn scored in the fifth, then seventh minutes of added time!

After that win over Forest, Leicester managed four more league wins before the World Cup break, but last Saturday’s 4-2 win at Villa Park was their first league win of 2023. Like Spurs, Leicester are in the fifth round of the FA Cup and will play Blackburn, so who knows, maybe we will have another cup meeting this season.

One of Leicester’s scorers against Villa was 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder Tete. He is a Shakhtar Donetsk player who had been on loan at Lyon but has now moved to Leicester until June. All foreign players in Ukraine are currently permitted to suspend their contracts until 30th June this year. Leicester’s other January signings were 20-year-old Copenhagen defender Victor Kristiansen (£17 million) and Australia defender Harry Souttar from Stoke City in a £15m deal which could eventually rise to £20m with add-ons. The 24-year-old centre-back has joined the Foxes on a five-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2028. Souttar was born in Aberdeen, but opted to play for Australia where his mother was born. Both these signings played against Aston Villa.

Leicester did send 7 players to the Qatar World Cup. These were goalkeeper Danny Ward (Wales), defender Wout Faes (who had no game time) , full back Timothy Castagne, and midfielder Youri Tielemans (all Belgium), James Maddison (England – also had no game time), Nampalys Mendy (Senegal), and Daniel Amartey (Ghana).

Leicester have had their injury problems, and in recent times had issues regarding defending dead ball situations. They do have some formidable players and have to be treated with respect. Spurs will have to face them without the suspended Cristian Romero, so I imagine Davinson Sanchez will start in his place. Fraser Forster will have to step up and make his second Premier League appearance after the news that Hugo Lloris has suffered a knee injury which is expected to keep him out for at least six weeks. The club has also announced that Yves Bissouma has suffered a stress fracture to his left ankle and was due to undergo surgery today (Friday). Despite these setbacks, I am predicting a 2-1 away win.

Antonio Conte has returned from Italy and has been seen on the training ground, but it is not yet known whether he will be on the touchline tomorrow.

Our referee (for only the second time) is Michael Salisbury. He was previously in charge of our 4-3 win over Leeds in November. Mr. Salisbury has been in charge of two Premier League games since then but has been in the middle for 9 such games in the whole of this season.

Did you know? - Lars Hirschfeld, who was a Canadian International goalkeeper on Spurs books between 2001 and 2004 never played a first team game for Spurs but spent a short time as a Leicester player in 2005. Lars played one league game for "The Foxes" and kept a clean sheet. It was Leicester's final Championship game of the 2004/05 season when they drew 0-0 at Plymouth. Leicester finished 15th and Plymouth 17th. As a matter of interest, Nottingham Forest were relegated to League One that year and stayed there for three seasons. Leicester had one year in the third tier in 2008/09 and climbed back to the Premier League in 2014. These days Lars Hirschfeld (aged 44) is the goalkeeping coach for FC Edmonton.
