Hoping for a trend to continue

We dared and we did!

So, what has happened to both teams since our 4-2 defeat at the Etihad on 19th January? Spurs have not conceded a goal in the two games they have played, beating Fulham away thanks too Harry Kane’s record-equalling 266th club goal for Spurs, and then keeping another clean sheet, scoring three goals at Preston. In the January transfer market, we’ve acquired Arnaut Danjuma, who scored a debut goal at Preston, and Pedro Porro, who will hopefully make his debut against his former club on Sunday.

City followed up their win over Spurs with a 3-0 win against Wolves, thanks to Erling Haaland’s fourth Premier League hat-trick of the season, and a nice 1-0 FA Cup win over (ahem) Arsenal. City’s entry into the January transfer purchase market was for 20-year-old Argentinean midfielder Maximo Perrone for £8 million from Velez Sarsfield. Surprisingly, Joao Cancelo has left for Bayern Munich (initially on loan) after apparently falling out with the manager who had given him little game time since the World Cup. I personally thought Cancelo was one of the best footballers in our league, able to play equally as well on the left or right of the field. Many Fantasy Football teams (including mine!) have had to be quickly adjusted.

Spurs first encountered Pedro Porro as an 18-year-old when he played against us in a pre-season friendly for Girona. The following year, he was signed up as a 18/19-year old (he was born on 13th September,1999) by Manchester City and quickly loaned out, firstly to Valladolid, then to Sporting, who bought him last summer. Sporting have made good money. Not only are we committed to purchase for up to £45 million, but we also signed away 15% of our sell-on rights for Marcus Edwards. Let’s hope we see him play, and that he has an exciting game!

City will be hoping to put an end to a trend of losing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They have lost all four meetings there so far, which have been as follows:-

09.04.19 Champions League Q-F(1)
Spurs 1 Man City 0
Scorer:- Son, 78

02.02.20 Premier League
Spurs 2 Man City 0
Scorers:- Bergwijn, 63
Son, 71

21.11.20 Premier League
Spurs 2 Man City 0
Scorers:- Son, 5
Lo Celso, 65

15.08.21 Premier League
Spurs 1 Man City 0
Scorer:- Son, 55

You will notice another trend. Heung-min Son, who made a welcome return to classic form last week against Preston, scored in each of those last four home games. For good measure, "Sonny" has scored in 2 other games scoring 3 other goals against City, most famously two of our three precious away goals in the 2019 away leg of that Champions League quarter-final.

Pep Guardiola will have good reason to be wary of Son, and of course Harry Kane, who is raring to go after his rest at Preston and will be seeking that record-breaking goal-or even two!

Those four homde wins have been under three different managers. The fourth - Antonio Conte was in charge for our sensational late 3-2 away win in February last year. Our Premier League record against City still stands up to scrutiny, although each side has scored 73 goals in those 51 meetings. We have suffered a couple of nasty defeats in the Sheik Mansour era.

Regarding our recent away defeat, there were just two minutes and eight seconds between Tottenham's opening two goals, and two minutes and nine seconds between Manchester City's first two goals in the second half. Spurs lost a Premier League match in which they led by two or more goals at half-time for the first time since April 2009. (Manchester United 5 Spurs 2)

Riyad Mahrez scored two of those goals and assisted Haaland’s goal in that game. Mahrez has scored 42 league goals in 130 appearances for City, having previously scored 42 in his 158 Leicester League games. Mahrez will be 32 later this month. We first encountered the Algerian International in the 2014/15 season, but his first goal against Spurs was in a 1-1 draw in August 2015 at the King Power Stadium. That goal equalised Dele Alli’s very first goal for Tottenham. Dele went onto score 51 league goals in 181 league appearances for Spurs, but it is so sad to reflect how his form waned – even before he left Spurs for Everton. Dele is currently on loan with Besiktas in Turkey.

Apart from their title or at least top four aspirations, both teams resume their Champions League campaign later this month. Spurs travel to the San Siro on Valentine’s Day to face Milan. The following week, City will play Leipzig, who ended our last Champions league campaign three years ago in one of the last games played before the 2020 Covid lockdown.

City secured their place in the knockout stage for the tenth successive season. They were beaten finalists in 2021. Manchester City have topped their group in each of their last six Champions League campaigns, having done so only once in their previous six participations.

Manchester City’s Rico Lewis became the fifth Englishman to start a Champions League match before turning 18 after Jack Wilshere, Josh McEachran, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham. Aged 17 years and 346 days, Rico Lewis became the youngest player in Champions League history to score on his first start in the competition, breaking the record previously held by Karim Benzema (17 years 352 days for Lyon vs Rosenberg). Lewis has started City’s last three games, including the one against Spurs. Nathan Ake took on the left back role in that Spurs game in the (involuntary) absence of Cancelo.

City's 18-year-old (now 19) defender Callum Doyle scored the equalising goal against Israel which led to England's U-19 team winning the European Under-19 Championship in extra-time on 1st July last year. Spurs' Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett played a prominent role for England in the tournament. Devine, who was only 18 last August, scored in a 2-0 group game win over Austria, whilst Scarlett (also still just 18) scored twice in a 4-0 win over Serbia. Both Devine and Scarlett scored goals in England's qualifying games too. Doyle spent last season on loan with Sunderland who won promotion from League One to the Championship via a Play-Off Final. This season, Doyle is on loan with Coventry.

Following Antonio Conte’s operation to remove his gall bladder this week and his much-needed recuperation, we can expect his deputy Christian Stellini to take charge of team affairs this weekend, although no doubt Antonio will give his full input. Our only injury absentee is likely to be Pape Sarr. Lucas Moura is available again, after playing half of a recent U-21 game, in which he scored against Arsenal! Realistically, Spurs’ only problem is one of selection. City will definitely be missing John Stones, but of course they usually have a plethora of stars to pick from anyway!

The game kicks off at 4.30pm on Sunday and is being televised by SKY in the UK. I think the trend of City failing to score at our new stadium will come to an end but hope we will score one more than them. Harry Kane to score, of course!

Andy Madley will be refereeing Spurs for only the third time. He previously had charge of our home defeat against Liverpool in November. Mr. Madley has been in the middle for 13 of this season's Premier League games, including City's home draw against Everton.
