Davinson to step up

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

I am writing these notes on my 70th birthday, which I share with the one and only Ricky Villa. I am minded to remind you that one of Ricky’s memorable goals was a fantastic 30-yarder in an FA Cup semi-final replay against Wolves in 1981 which made the score 3-0 and took us on to play Manchester City in THAT final. The semi-final game was played at Highbury, of all places.

3-0 is also the winning scoreline I have predicted for Spurs, who will once again play in front of a full house at new White Hart Lane, public transport difficulties permitting. There was a rumour earlier this week that Cristian Romero had a muscle injury and would be out for several weeks. Antonio Conte in his press conference today expects Romero to be available next week. Davinson Sanchez can step up to the plate and Japhet Tanganga will no doubt be on the bench to cover if necessary.

Having improved on our results in our first two games compared to the corresponding games last season, Antonio Conte will be looking forward to doing the same in this fixture, which we lost 2-0 in February last season. Jimenez and Dendoncker scored the Wolves goals. Jimenez suffered a knee injury in a pre-season friendly against Besiktas. He is not expected to return before the end of the month. Now 31, Jimenez's powers seems to have diminished somewhat, as he hasn't scored in any game since March and hit just 6 Premier League goals last season in 34 appearances.

Wolves haven’t completed too much transfer business so far, but the two most recent confirmed deals seem to be the most significant. Firstly, they signed Portugal forward Goncalo Guedes from Valencia on a five-year deal worth £27.5m. The 25-year-old scored 28 goals in 146 La Liga appearances after joining Valencia from Paris St-Germain on an initial loan deal in 2017. Only today (18th) came the news that Wolves have signed Sporting Lisbon and Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes for a club record £38m fee. That Portuguese influence continues, but Wolves form and results have been disappointing in their first two games. They missed quite a few chances last week in a goalless draw against Fulham. Mitrovic took a weak penalty to at least allow Wolves a point.

Defender Roman Saiss left at the end of his contract, and it was a surprise to learn that former club captain Conor Coady went on a season-long loan to Everton. Aged 29, Coady had made 273 league appearances for the Molineux club. He was born in Liverpool and started his career with Everton's local rivals. Wolves have signed former Burnley defender Nathan Collins for a fee of £20.5million.

Hwang Hee-chan was a loan player from Leipzig last season and has been signed on full terms this season. Chiquinho is out for most of the season with cruciate knee injuries.

Only the three relegated clubs, Burnley, Watford and Norwich, scored fewer than Wolves' 38 Premier League goals last term. Wolves are without a win in their last 10 league games. Their last victory was a 2-1 at home to Aston Villa on 2nd April. They slipped down to 10th place by the end of last season, having been contenders for a European place.

Our first Premier League meeting against Wolves was in December 2003 when we won 5-2. That was the first time we played for League points since Micky Hazard scored the only goal of the game in March 1984. You might like to read Brian Judson’s preview for that game, which features some interesting Wolves history.

There has been a fair amount of previous history in which away teams have won these meetings. I personally do not expect this to happen on Saturday. The game kicks off at 12.30pm in front of BT SPORT cameras.

Harry Kane made his Premier League debut onthis day 10 years ago (at Newcastle). It would be fabulous if Harry could score at least one goal to make him the highest Premier League scorer for one club, thus overtaking Sergio Aguero's 184 for Manchester City.

According to my records, this will be referee Simon Hooper's first game in the middle. He has been fourth official or VAR for previous games, including our 2-0 home defeat by Wolves in February. Mr. Hooper has been in charge of 16 Premier League games over the last year, including two Wolves matches.
