Crunch time on Sunday lunchtime!
In April two years ago when we ended the season with a flourish of 8 wins in our last 11 league games to snatch Arsenal's Champions League place we beat Villa away 4-0. Son scored the third of his five hat-tricks (so far) for the club and Dejan Kulusevski scored his third Spurs goal. That was our last win over Villa, then managed by Steve Gerrard.
Now, with Unai Emery at the helm, Villa have won three consecutive games against Spurs for the first time in 26 years. Between November 1994 and January 1996 "The Villans" beat us in 4 consecutive games. The run started in November 1994 with a 4-3 thanks to a last minute goal by Dean Saunders. This was also the game when Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich gave a controversial Nazi salute. (Jurgen Klinsmann was in the Spurs team and had scored a penalty against the Australian born keeper) That was followed by home and away 1-0 Villa wins and a 2-1 win at Villa Park for the home side in January, 1996.
Last November's win for Villa at Tottenham was our third consecutive league defeat for the first time after January/February 2022 in games against Chelsea, Southampton, and Wolves.
Unai Emery is unbeaten in all six of his Premier League meetings with Spurs. Until last season's away defeat, Spurs had won eight consecutive away matches against Aston Villa in all competitions by an aggregate score of 23-3.
Villa pipped us and won the final place in Europe to compete in the Europa Conference League. They won their group and came through a gritty Round of 16 first leg game in Amsterdam against Ajax, which ended 0-0. Emery used his squad well to try and ensure the best preparation for Sunday's 1pm kick-off (SKY). The early kick-off is to accommodate the 3.45pm game between Liverpool and Manchester City. Sky will be all over their Sunday afternoon fare. For us, it's crunch time on Sunday lunchtime in the battle for a top four place!
At the end of the January transfer window, Villa signed forward Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough. The transfer fee for the 21-year-old, who plays predominantly as a winger, is £8m plus add-ons which may rise to £15m. Unai Emery's use of his squad in Amsterdam led to Roger's first start. Key players such as club captain John McGinn and Leon Bailey came off the bench in the last quarter of the European game.
Ollie Watkins (surely a shoe-in for Gareth Southgate's Euro squad) is Villa's top league scorer with 16 goals. Bailey has 8, one behind the impressive Douglas Luiz.
Villa have won 4 of their last five games. They had 15 consecutive home wins after losing at home to Arsenal last February, which included a 1-0 win against the same team on 9th December. Villa recently had a bad patch when they lost three consecutive home games to Newcastle, Chelsea (FA Cup) and Maanchester United. Whilst our game will be tough, Villa will attack and they are certainly not infallible.
Spurs have now taken 50 points from their 26 games so far in this Premier League season; five more than at the same stage of the previous season. Last week, Spurs scored for the 38th consecutive Premier League match, the equivalent of an entire season.
Centre-back Clement Lenglet, who was on loan to Spurs last season, has been similarly on loan from Barcelona with Villa this season. Lenglet made a total of 35 appearances for Spurs last season, scoring one goal for us in our Champions League win in Marseilles. He has made 19 appearancces for Villa this season including the whole of Thursday night's game against Ajax in Amsterdam.
Spurs will again have to manage without Richarlison, but Pedro Porro is back in training and fit to start this game. This promises to be an exciting game, and will hopefully be of an end to end nature. The official site were making a big thing of our record number of passes in last week's Palace game. That doesn't mean a lot when most of those passes are sideways or backwards in our own half. I am not confident and dare not predict better than a 2-2 draw, although, as always I hope for more.
Chris Nicholl, who died on February 24th, aged 77, played over 250 games for Aston Villa between March 1972 and May 1977. Nicholl was renowned as a hard-hitting centre-half and was signed by Villa (from Luton) when in the Third Division for what was a record £90,000 fee at that level. Nicholl helped Villa climb back to the top tier and won two League Cup winners' medals in 1975 and in 1977 when he scored a cracking 80th minute equaliser from 40 yards before Villa went on to beat Everton 3-2 in extra time.
Nicholl later played for, and managed Southampton, nurturing players such as Matt Le Tissier and Alan Shearer. Nicholl died on the same weekend as Stan Bowles, and both were victims of dementia. In Nicholl's case he had been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a form of dementia attributed to years of heading footballs.
Referee Chris Kavanagh is in charge of Spurs for only the second time this season, having previously officiated for our 4-1 home win against Newcastle three months ago. Any win would be welcome on Sunday!
