Don't count on a win here

Welcome to N17

We've reached the penultimate weekend of a season which began with much optimism regarding Spurs. Champions League hopes have faded, and we are on a run of four consecutive league defeats which we have not suffered for twenty years. In a season when we have only played 41 games it is disappointing to be finishing in such a low state of morale.

By beating relegation strugglers Burnley tomorrow (3pm kick-off) and already relegated Sheffield United next week, we will hang on to fifth place to earn a Europa League place next season. Vincent Kompany's Burnley team must win both their remaining games to have any chance of staying up. Forest host resurgent Chelsea tomorrow and Burnley will be hoping to beat us while Forest lose. That would herald a humdinger deciding game next week when Burnley host Forest. (Forest lost their appeal against their four-point penalty)

However, we haven't lost at home to Burnley in the league in 48 years having last fallen to them in N17 back in October 1974 (3-2). We have also scored 11 goals without reply in our last four home games against Burnley.

Considering our 5-2 win at Turf Moor in September and Burnley's overall form, you might think a home win is a "given". However, Burnley's current six-game form is better than ours, as you can see above.

Our September away win was our highest score at Turf Moor in 60 league and cup meetings. The previous time we scored 5 away goals was at Norwich in May 2022. Our highest away score against Burnley before September was a 4-1 win in February 1925. Heung-min Son, who scored his fifth Premier League hat-trick scored his famous box-to-box goal against Burnley in a 5-0 home win in December 2019.

Our last home league match against Burnley was our penultimate game of the 21-22 season. It followed a super 3-0 home win over Arsenal, and it took a Harry Kane penalty to seal the 1-0 win which left us needing just one point at Norwich on the last day. However, we faced a revitalised Burnley after the interim manager Mike Jackson had replaced the long-term custodian Sean Dyche in mid-April.

Harry Kane was involved in 12 goals in 12 Premier League appearances against Burnley, scoring nine and assisting three others. He has also scored eight goals in his last eight outings against the Clarets in the top flight. Despite creating more personal goal-scoring records in his first season with Bayern Munich, Harry still has no trophy to his name. Perhaps Euro '24 then?

We also played Burnley at home in our sole cup win of the season in January. That was also a 1-0 win, thanks to a superb strike by Pedro Porro. A more famous FA Cup win over Burnley was that of 1962 in the final. Terry Medwin, who died recently, played in that game. (Did you know that Terry Medwin's goal at the 1958 World Cup finals was their last until Gareth Bale's penalty against the United States in Qatar in 2022?) Terry will be remembered before tomorrow's game.

I am hoping to see the personnel who finished last Sunday's game, together with the level of desire and penetration. A positive start is essential tomorrow, and I predict a 3-1 home win.

Welsh international winger Leighton James who died last month aged 71 began his professional career with Burnley in 1970. James spent three spells with the Lancashire club and also played for Derby, QPR, Swansea and Sunderland. James, who was capped 54 times made 399 appearances for Burnley, scoring 81 goals. James' first club appearance was against Nottingham Forest in Division One and his last came in a fourth division game against Scarborough. James made over 600 Football League appearances for his various clubs.

Jarred Gillett referees us for the eighth time. This will be his fourth Spurs game this season, three of which have been against relegation candidates Nottingham Forest, Luton and now Burnley. We won the previous two games. Let's do it again!

Did you know? - 14 years ago, on May 9th, 2010, having secured Champions League football for the first time at Manchester City, we played Burnley away on the last day of the season and lost 4-2. Two future Real Madrid players (Bale and Modric) scored our goals. Luka Modric (39 in September) is likely to play a part in his seventh Champions League Final for Real Madrid on 1st June, having won no less than five winners' medals to date.
