They've changed the guard at Palace

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out to beat the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." - Danny Blanchflower

The postponement of last week's scheduled game away to Carabao Cup finalists Chelsea means that this Saturday's fixture against Crystal Palace will be the fifth home game of our last seven matches. We had hoped to take maximum advantage of this run of "winnable" home games, but defeat in our last game against Wolves put paid to hopes of securing a top four place. Disappointing draws in our two away fixtures in this spell didn't help either.

Now we face a Crystal Palace side refreshed by the appointment of a new coach.

On Friday 16th February, Crystal Palace said manager Roy Hodgson was stable in hospital after he was "taken ill" during training on the previous morning. Palace cancelled a news conference after the 76-year-old became unwell. It was widely reported on that Palace were set to sack Hodgson, but on Monday 20th February Hodgson stood down (having been released from hospital) and former Eintracht Frankfurt coach was formally announced as the new coach.

When we played Wolves on 17th February Palace's new coach (not announced at the time) was spotted by TV cameras in the stands. He also attended Palace's game at Goodison Park but took over coaching duties the next day. Glasner had taken Eintracht to Europa League glory in 2022 in a penalty shoot-out win over Rangers, and finished one point behind Spurs when we topped the following season's Champions' League Group C.

Glasner had a nice start to his Palace career with a 3-0 win over struggling Burnley last Saturday. However, "The Eagles" had to wait till the 68th minute for their first goal, despite the fact Burnley's Josh Brownhill had been sent off after 35 minutes.

19-year-old midfielder Adam Wharton, who was signed from Blackburn in January for a fee of £18m, potentially rising to £22m, played last week and has so far made four appearances in the Premier League for his new club.

Most of Palace's goals have been scored by Edouard and Olise (6 each), Eze (5) and Ayew (4). It is safe to say that Palace have badly missed Wilfried Zaha, who left for Galatasaray last summer.

This will be the 50th league meeting between the two sides. The first took place in August 1969 at Selhurst Park when we won 2-0 with goals by Martin Chivers and Jimmy Pearce. We won the return 2-0 too when Alan Mullery and Steve Perryman scored. That was Steve's first senior goal for the club, having made his debut in September that year. I've written elsewhere, and you can easily search on the site, about our embarrassing Cup defeat to Palace in January 1970.

Harry Kane scored the solitary goal in last season's home game, giving us a sixth league double over Palace since the Selhurst Park team became a Premier League side, all of which have been achieved since 2013.

Tottenham's only defeat in their last 17 Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace was a 3-0 loss at Selhurst Park in the 21/22 season.

The Eagles are without a win in 11 top-flight away games at Tottenham since a 1-0 victory in November 1997 and have lost the last eight in a row.

The Lilywhites have now scored in a club record 37 consecutive Premier League fixtures since a 1-0 defeat by Wolves last March. It's the second longest scoring run in the division's history after Arsenal's 55-match streak between May 2001 and November 2002.

This preview is of personal necessity being published before any official team news, but we must hope that both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie will be available for Saturday's game (3pm - not on TV) as they were much-missed against Wolves. Palace will be missing their England International centre-back Marc Guehi who has been ruled out for up to eight weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Palace's win last week gave them a vital eight point cushion above the drop zone. For Spurs, this is a must-win game before the challenge of next Sunday's trip to Villa Park. I am predicting a 3-1 home win. I will not be attending this game, and the Spurs Odyssey report will be delayed this week but posted asap.

Our match referee will be John Brooks for the third time this season, and sixth match in all. Previous appointments with Spurs this season have been at Luton and Old Trafford. Mr Brooks has been in the middle for 16 Premier League games so far this season.

Did you know? - 100 years ago, in January 1924 Palace knocked Spurs out of the FA Cup in the first round in the first meeting between the two clubs after they had joined the Football League (there had been Southern League meetings). The score was 2-0 and both goals were scored by Billy Morgan. Morgan's professional career ended the next season. These were his only FA Cup goals for Palace. Morgan's previous FA Cup goal had been scored 10 years earlier for Birmingham against current Palace nemesis Brighton!
