Too many imponderables
There are too many imponderables for me to consider regarding tomorrow night's Carabao Cup against Manchester City, kicking off at the inconvenient late time of 8.15pm to satisfy the SKY paymasters.
Firstly, which Spurs team will turn up? Will we see a performance such as that when we beat West Ham 4-1, or will we have to suffer the ineptitude that was shown on Sunday at Selhurst Park.
As for personnel, Ange has said that Son will not be ready for this game (hopefully Sunday), and that Wilson Odobert suffered a setback following his brief appearance at the end of last week's Europa League game against AZ Alkmaar. I suspect Werner will start on the left tomorrow.
As for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, we know that yesterday's Ballon D'Or winner, Rodri, is out for the season, but City are still winning games without him, and in fact have yet to lose a game this season. Their League Cup victims in the third round were Watford. Haaland was not involved in the game. 16-year-old Kaden Braithwaite made his club debut on the left of a back three. He hasn't featured since. 19-year-old Nico O'Reilly played.
My point is that even without key players (Kevin de Bruyne hasn't played for a month), Pep finds a way to win, and of course league leaders City do have strength in depth, despite a player such as Alvarez departing for Atletico Madrid in the summer.
21-year-old Oscar Bobb, who had plenty of game time last season, is out till the New Year. I've seen no team news from City, but players such as De Bruyne, Doku, Grealish and Kyle Walker could be absent.
Spurs do have a habit of beating City, even since the Arab takeover, but we have lost both our most recent Cup meetings against City (see above), and also our last two meetings which have been at Tottenham. They beat us 2-0 in that strange league game in May.
It is therefore imponderable for me to predict a home win tomorrow. After all, as the saying goes, it's the hope that kills you. In our case, there hasn't been much real hope of late, so good luck to us all.
Rob Jones was our referee when we lost at Newcastle in September. With no VAR, we must put our faith in his decisions. We could be in for penalties (no extra-time). I am prepared for a late night.
