A huge task for Spurs at Anfield
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture
Spurs travel to Anfield for tomorrow's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg (8pm on SKY and ITV), holding an unexpected 1-0 lead courtesy of Lucas Bergvall's first club goal. The goal was scored in the 86th minute and caused controversy because Liverpool felt Bergvall should have been sent off for a second yellow card.
That first leg game preceded the FA Cup third round games, and again this weekend, both clubs have fourth round games. Liverpool travel to Plymouth on Sunday. We face a difficult match at Villa Park. I am sure both clubs will field their strongest available sides tomorrow.
In Liverpool's case that means it is likely we will see Mo Salah play. Last weekend, Salah scored both Liverpool goals at Bournemouth taking him to 178 Premier League goals and thus overtaking Frank Lampard to take sixth place in the all-time list of Premier League scorers. Sergio Aguero (184 goals) is next in Salah's sights.
Spurs have only won two Premier League games at Anfield and we've only ever won 6 league games in 81 such away meetings since 1910. We have however, won two of our three cup visits to Anfield in the Premier League era. Famously the first of those wins was the March 1995 FA Cup quarter-final when Teddy Sheringham equalised in the first half and the gracefully supreme Jurgen Klinsmann won it in the 88th minute.
The second such win came in the 1998-99 League Cup when former Liverpool centre-half John Scales scored his only Spurs goal in 37 appearances. Scales scored the second of our three goals after Iversen's opener and before Allan Nielsen's second half goal. Michael Owen's goal was nothing more than a consolation for the home side. Spurs went on to win the League Cup that season and also beat Manchester United on the way to that trophy. When we won it in 2008, one of our victims was Man City, who we have also beaten this season, along with United. There's a good omen to cling to!
That 1998 League Cup win was the first time we scored three goals in any away game against Liverpool. The only other occasion was in a 4-3 Premier League defeat in April 2023. In a crazy and agonising finish, Spurs came back from 3-0 down to equalise in added time through Richarlison, only to see Jota win the game a minute after our third.
We don't need to win tomorrow's game of course, but it is still a huge task to get a draw here. Arne Slot has already announced that Trent Alexander-Arnold won't be playing, after he suffered a knock at Bournemouth. 21-year-old Conor Bradley started in Alexander-Arnold's place in the first leg and is a trusted stand-in.
Injury-stricken Spurs have been reinforced by the signings of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, both of whom are likely to be involved. Danso is going to be needed at centre-back after we learned that Radu Dragusin will be out for the season with an ACL injury. Ange Postecoglou has said that Micky van de Ven will play no part in tomorrow's game. He and Romero are being protected until absolutely ready for high intensity games. With our other injuries, this means that apart from Danso and Tel, the squad remains the same as that for Brentford. I hope we can hold onto our slender lead and reach our tenth league cup final.
Craig Pawson is our referee for the 34th time. His first Spurs game was away to Norwich in February 2014 when we lost. We also lost his last game in charge at Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. As in the first leg of this game, we will have VAR available.
