Time to improve our London Derby record
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture
Spurs travel to Craven Cottage for their ninth Premier League London derby of the season. This game kicks off at 1.30pm on Sunday, but is not being televised here in the UK. This is the fourth of six away derby fixtures, with Chelsea and West Ham to follow. Our one remaining home derby game is against Crystal Palace in the penultimate week of the season. It's time to improve our London Derby record.
We've not had much success at this level this season, managing just three wins in 8 games so far. Our home game against Fulham was drawn 1-1. That was one of just four drawn league games for Spurs this season. Only bottom club Southampton have drawn less games.
Our other drawn games (all score-draws) were away to Leicester and at home to Wolves and Bournemouth last week. Our last goalless draw in the league was in April 2022 at Brentford.
Last season we played Fulham away twice. The first occasion was the League Cup second round exit in August 2023 (on penalties). The other was a dismal 3-0 defeat on the same date (16th March) last year.
Fulham's win last year brought an end to our record run of 39 consecutive Premier League games in which we had scored. It was also the end of a run of seven consecutive away wins for Spurs and Fulham's first home league win against us since November 2008. That was our first defeat under Harry Redknapp who had led us to a great recovery after two points from 8 games. The 3-0 defeat was as bad to watch as our 4-0 FA Cup defeat at Craven Cottage in 2011.
Fulham do remain one of our favourite Premier League opponents historically. We have better points per game records against only Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Brentford, in that order. However, history is one thing. We must concern ourselves with the present. Fulham are eight points and three places above us. Unlike us, they are in the chase for a European place gained through league position. Spurs can at least hold hopes of Europe, having qualified for the Europa League quarter-finals following last night's win over AZ Alkmaar.
Marco Silva's side has had some great results, such as recent wins at Newcastle and at home to high-flying Nottingham Forest, but between 1st December and 5th January, although unbeaten in 8 games, they drew six of those matches.
Fulham also have an FA Cup quarter-final to look forward to, at home to Crystal Palace after the international break.
On 6th February, Fulham re-signed winger Willian until the end of the season, six months after he left the club. The Brazilian, who played for the Cottagers from 2022-24, has rejoined as a free agent after leaving Olympiakos at the end of December. As a free agent his move did not need to be confirmed before the February 3rd transfer deadline. Willian has made brief appearances in five games since his return.
Ryan Sessegnon was making his first Premier League start for Fulham (at Molineux on 25th February) since his return to the club in the summer and his first start in the competition for over two years. It took him 58 seconds to put the away
side in front following a sweeping move.
Fulham's absentees include Serbian midfielder Sasa Lukic, serving a two-match suspension after being shown a tenth yellow card against Wolves. Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson suffered a hamstring injury in December, before the same issue struck him in the other leg. He's probably out for the season. Kenny Tete and Harry Wilson are also not likely to return till next month.
Apart from the long-term absentee Radu Dragusin, we could have a fully available squad next month, but Danso, Kulusevski and Richarlison will not be available till then. It remains to be seen if Postecoglou rotates his squad in any way after Thursday night's win. I think we need to play our strongest team. Our next game will be at Stamford Bridge on Thursday 3rd April.
Andy Madley referees Spurs for the third time this season and for the ninth occasion in total. Mr. Madley was in charge of our 4-1 home win against West Ham, and the 2-1 home defeat by Newcastle.
Did you know? - Fulham were first promoted to the top flight in 1949, a year before Spurs returned as Division Two Champions. Our first meeting at this level took place at Craven Cottage on 23rd March, 1951. Fulham were managed by Bill Dodgin and Arthur Rowe was in charge of Spurs. We won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Peter Murphy. The story of our first Division One League title season is told here.
