Beware of inconsistency!

Welcome to N17

Following our sensational 4-0 win away to Manchester City and Fulham's surprising 4-1 home defeat to lowly Wolves, some might think this will be a walk-over for Spurs. Sensible Spurs fans will be only too aware of our inconsistency, indicated by our win one, lose one recent form. Last night's 2-2 Europa League draw against Roma can also be cited as evidence of our frailties.

Last week, Fulham fell victim to two superb goals by Wolves' 25-year-old Brazilian Matheus Cunha, who has scored 7 goals in Wolves' league games, 4 of which have been in his last three games. Two of Wolves' goals came very late in the game.

Former Arsenal and Everton man Alex Iwobi had opened the scoring for Fulham whose side is likely to feature two more recent Arsenal players. 24-year-old Emile Smith-Rowe joined in the summer for a club record £34m. Smith-Rowe had a particularly impressive first half of the 2021/22 season and was capped three times by England, but had trouble breaking into Arteta's side after recent recruitment. Smith-Rowe has been a mainstay in Marco Silva's side this season.

The other Arsenal connection is loanee Reiss Nelson. All three players with be additionally determined to perform against Spurs.

Striker Raul Jimenez suffered that horrific head injury at The Emirates in November 2020, but seems to have found some of his old form this season with four league goals. He has started 9 of Fulham's games, and come off the bench in the other games.

Centre-back Joachim Andersen impressed for Fulham in the 2020/21 season and has returned to the club after three seasons at Crystal Palace. Fulham have other foils such as midfielders Sande Berge, Sasa Lukic and another Brazilian - forward Rodrigo Muniz. Harry Wilson (once of Liverpool) has scored some cracking goals after coming off the bench too, including and added time equaliser and winner against Brentford.

Fulham are only a point behind us, and would have been above us had last week's result followed the form book.

Fulham lost Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich for a fee of £43 million. Ryan Sessegnon agreed a two-year contract to return to Fulham after being released by Tottenham Hotspur. Ryan has yet to start a Premier League game this season, but played in both Fulham's league cup games. They lost their third round tie at Preston in a 16-15 penalty shoot-out!

This is Fulham's fourth spell and their 18th season in the Premier League. Their first stay between 2001 and 2014 was the club's longest period in the top flight. Fulham entered the Football League in 1907, a year before Spurs, but it took them till 1949 to reach the old Division One for the first time. The Craven Cottage side (nicknamed "The Cottagers") drew 1-1 at home and away against Spurs in their promotion season. Bill Nicholson scored our goal at Craven Cottage in December 1948. That was the first of Bill's six career goals for the club. Len Duquemin scored in the home game the following April.

Fulham's promotion side that year was managed by Frank Osborne, who as a Spurs player in the Autumn of 1925 had the distinction of scoring hat-tricks in three consecutive games, against Liverpool (W 3-1), Leicester (L3-5) and West Ham (W4-2). South African born Osborne had previously played for Fulham.

Spurs finished fifth in the second division in 48-49, but would follow Fulham into the tip flight the following season before winning their first league title.

Fulham have never won a major trophy, but they did reach the FA Cup Final in 1975 with Alan Mullery and Bobby Moore in their team. Arguably, their greatest achievement was to reach the 2010 Europa League Final with Roy Hodgson at the helm. Former Spur Simon Davies scored their goal in a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid. Diego Forlan scored both goals for the winners, whose team included Sergio Aguero.

Fulham's longest spell in the old top-flight was between 1959 and 1968 with Edmonton-born Johnny Haynes in their side.

Whilst not ruling him out, Ange Postecoglou has stated that Cristian Romero is not likely to return just yet. Ange describes our squad as very thin, which is a concern with 9 games to come in December, starting this Sunday at 1.30pm. Bentancur has to return to the sidelines, and with the exception of Forster for Vicario, I suspect we'll see the same starting line-up as that which did so well last week at The Etihad. I predict a narrow win for Spurs.

Darren Bond is refereeing Spurs for only the second time. His previous Spurs match was our defeat to Crystal Palace. We must hope for better this weekend!
