Both sides have high hopes

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by night

After a break of six weeks since our last Champions League game, Spurs have a tough home fixture for Matchday Seven of this season's competition. When we first met our opponents Borussia Dortmund 10 years ago in The Europa League Round of 16, we were challenging for the Premier League title (Oh yes, we were!). Dortmund were five points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, who went on to win their title.

How times change! Ten years later we are languishing in the bottom half, while Borussia Dortmund still chase title favourites Bayern Munich.

The form guide of the two sides in the six-week period since Matchday Six is radically different. Spurs have played 8 and won 1 drawn 2 and lost 5 of their games. The German side has played just five matches (they had a winter break over Christmas) and are unbeaten.

The preview of that first competitive meeting with Dortmund is illustrative regarding their history. At that time in March 2016, Thomas Tuchel was the Dortmund manager, having succeeded Jurgen Klopp, who left for Liverpool, but was still lauded in Dortmund, as we experienced in a particular bar we visited - not just once!

Here are the links to match reports of our six competitive meetings. As you can see, we lost the first two, but won all four of our Champions League meetings:-

1. Dortmund 3 Spurs 0, 10.03.2016
2. Spurs 1 Dortmund 2, 17.03.2016
3. Spurs 3 Dortmund 1, 13.09.2017
4. Dortmund 1 Spurs 2, 21.11.2017
5. Spurs 3 Dortmund 0, 13.02.2019
6. Dortmund 0 Spurs 1, 05.03.2019

The nature of the Champions League at this stage means we only meet Dortmund at home. The 2016 game was played in our last season at White Hart Lane and the two home Champions League games were played at our temporary home venue at Wembley in front of big crowds. That March 2019 game was our penultimate game at Wembley before the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. We were on our way to a Champions League Final. This, therefore, is Dortmund's first visit to this stadium.

Borussia Dortmund can be counted upon to score. The only time they have failed to score this season was when beaten 1-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen last month. 29-year-old French-born Guinea national Serhou Guirassy is their top league scorer and has three Champions League goals to his name, but goals are supplied by a number of players. Karim Adeyemi, Maximilian Beier and Julian Brandt are only one league goal behind Guirassy.

Previous goalscoring stars at Dortmund were Aubameyang (2013-18) and Haaland (2019-22), before they came to the Premier League.

In Dortmund's six Champions League games this season, there have been 32 goals scored, 19 of which have been put away by the German side.

Familiar names in the Dortmund squad are striker Fabio Silva (formerly of Wolves), midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka (signed from Chelsea) and 20-year-old Jobe Bellingham who was signed from Sunderland and followed his more famous Brother's footsteps by going to Dortmund. None of these three are regular Bundesliga starters. Former Liverpool player Emre Can is now in his seventh season at Dortmund including the second half of the 2019/20 season.

The Spurs squad for this game is decimated by injuries, suspension and non-registration. Ben Davies has joined the known injury absences of Kulusevski, Maddison, Kudus, Bentancur, and Richarlison. Joao Palhinha will not be fit for this game. Micky van de Ven is suspended after he was booked in our last Champions League game. Yves Bissouma, Radu Dragusin, and new signing Conor Gallagher are not registered for this phase of the Champions League. Mathys Tel was drafted in for the injured Solanke, but Thomas Frank reversed that situation to include Solanke, but to once again exclude Tel, who is naturally upset. Pape Sarr is reported to be in hospital due to illness in Morocco, despite winning an African Cup of Nations winners' medal.

Borussia Dortmund host Inter in next week's final game when Spurs travel to Frankfurt. Both teams hope for two wins which would give an outside chance of top eight status and no need for a play-off round. In Spurs' case, bearing in mind their absentees and poor form, I have no hope of finishing in the top eight, but there is every chance that they would make the play-off round, even with two defeats! Every penny counts. Let's face it, we will not be seeing European football next season.

With eleven first-teamers available tomorrow, the team picks itself and will probably read:- Vicario; Pedro Porro, Romero (Capt.), Danso, Spence/Udogie; Gray, Bergvall; Odobert, Xavi, Kolo Muani; Solanke. The bench will be filled with youngsters. I just hope we can enjoy the game.

Thomas Frank remains in charge, and it seems Saturday's game at Burnley will be decisive regarding his future.

Referee Glenn Nyberg and his on field team of officials are from Sweden. This will be Mr. Nyberg's second Spurs game, having taken charge of last season's home Europa League match against Roma. His assistants are the same for this game. Mr Nyberg is kept busy at home and abroad, and has had charge of four Champions League games already this season, including Newcastle's home defeat to Barcelona.
