Hoping for a happy tea party!

On an emotionally charged opening day at St. James' Park last Sunday when Kevin Keegan was vividly remembered by both sets of fans, Newcastle twice took the lead, but were denied in virtually the last kick of the game when Dominic Szoboszlai scored emphatically from the penalty spot to salvage a draw.

Geordie fans had booed their former striker Alexander Isak throughout the game, and will no doubt do the same for Sandro Tonali in tomorrow's game, which is another Saturday tea-time game for Spurs. I'm hoping for a happy tea party this week!

Isak and Tonali are just two of the five iconic figures who have left over the last year. Anthony Gordon was a big money signing for Barcelona. Eddie Howe decided he needed a break, and captain Bruno Guimaraes deserted for Arsenal.

Nonetheless, new coach Matthias Jaissle (formerly with Al-Ahli) inspired Newcastle to a performance which no doubt took Liverpool by surprise.

Unlike away fans at St. James' Park, Newcastle's travelling army will not be up in the rafters, but will be accorded the courtesy of a pitch-side view of the game.

Kevin Keegan, who died in July, aged 75, was revered at Newcastle when he got them promoted in the early 90s. I remember meeting a 15-year-old lad on a train in 1993 when Keegan was leading "The Magpies" to a convincing Division One Championship title, thus giving Newcastle a first Premier League season. This lad was a home season ticket holder, travelling home to Gillingham. Such was the fervour for "King Kev", demonstrated fully last week.

Newcastle made what looks like being their marquee signing this week, when midfielder Nicolas Gonzalez (Nico) arrived from Manchester City. Assuming Gonzalez starts tomorrow, he appears to be addressing the absence of both Tonali and Guimaraes. Other signings include teenage midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax in a deal worth up to £23m, goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga, and defender Amar Dedic from Benfica,

As for Spurs, we fans are a bit like kids in a sweeet shop with the confirmed arrivals this week of both Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City. When all our players are fit Roberto de Zerbi will have a job figuring out his best team. I suspect there will be two or three departures this weekend.

Savio had a memorable 20 minute debut in our 5-1 Carabao Cup win on Wednesday night. I suspect he will start tomorrow, and might find his City teammate Marmoush in the middle!

Newcastle had more of a struggle in their League Cup game, beating West Brom 3-2, thanks to two goals from former Leicester winger Harvey Barnes. Barnes has been a consistent goalscorer for both clubs.

More of a problem player for "The Magpies" has been Nick Woltemade, signed in a hurry last year to replace Isak, but distinctly failing to live up to expectations. Woltemade has scored just two goals in his last 33 appearances for club and country(Germany) since last Christmas. He played just two minutes against Paraguay in this year's World Cup.

Woltemade did score one of Newcastle's two goals in last October's 2-0 league cup defeat of Spurs.

Yoanne Wissa scored Congo's equaliser in their first World Cup match this summer. He followed that with two goals against Uzbekistan to give his country a Round of 32 game against England, which England won narrowly thanks to two Harry Kane goals.

Newcastle have won seven of the last nine competitive meetings between the clubs.

Spurs have now won just one of our last eight league meetings. Newcastle won six of the other games and have won a league double over us in the 24/25 and 22/23 seasons.

Manager Thomas Frank was sacked the morning after our February 10th home defeat. His record with Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions was played 38, won 13, lost 14, win % 34.21.

Newcastle now have the edge of superiority over us in our 62 Premier League meetings, having won three more games. They've beaten us 13 times at Tottenham.

However, we have won more Premier League points against only four other current teams in the Premier League. These are Everton (124), Manchester City (99), West Ham (97) and Aston Villa (96).

There has not been a 0-0 result in meetings between these two teams since 18th August, 1971 (my 19th birthday!). Spurs have not drawn any domestic game 0-0 at home since September 2017, against Swansea. We did draw 0-0 at Brentford on New Year's Day, which was the venue for our previous Premier League goalless draw in April 2022.

Tottenham Hotspur's defeat away to Brentford means they have recorded more league losses than wins in London (52 to 51) since the start of September 2021, even though three-quarters of those matches have been at home. I'm hoping for a win tomorrow and will offer 2-1 as the scoreline.

Our match referee (for the 18th time) will be Peter Bankes. The last game we won with Mr. Bankes in charge was our 2-0 away win against Manchester City last August. That City side included Marmoush (and Gonzalez), but not Savio. Our goals were scored by Brennan Johnson (now with Everton) and Palhinha (now with Benfica).

This season, I plan to look back on the events of the 2016-17 season - ten years ago. It was a season in which we finished runners-up - our highest ever Premier League position. We scored more league goals than any other team (including Champions Chelsea), and conceded less than all other teams.

Our third game of the season was a home draw on 27th August against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. James Milner gave Liverpool the lead with a 43rd minute penalty after a foul by Erik Lamela on Firmino. Danny Rose equalised in the 72nd minute in front of the North Stand at White Hart Lane. Spurs were unbeaten in their first three games. Liverpool had lost the previous week 2-0 at Burnley.
