What can go wrong here?
So Aston Villa have lost their last five games, without scoring a goal, and now they host Spurs, against whom they have also lost their last five games (four in the league), and also without scoring a goal. What can go wrong here for Spurs?
Well, as any Spurs fan will tell you, especially in their current league form - anything and everything. Like Villa, Spurs have managed only one win in their last 6 games, but with two draws their current league form is only marginally better than Paul Lambert's side.
In his recently published book, Lambert's assistant, Roy Keane, referred to the prospect of a Sir Alex Ferguson team talk before a Spurs game. Keane was thinking he only wanted the manager to say "It's only f***ing Tottenham", and allegedly that is more or less what Mr Ferguson said. I like to think that the former Manchester United manager was far more professional than that. Certainly, if Keane is involved with the team talk for Sunday's game, he would need to fire up his team with far more detail.
In our last five games against Villa, the aggregate score is 15-0. it was 9-0 last season, with a 4-0 away win in the Capital One Cup, 2-0 away in the Premier League, and 3-0 at home in our last game of the season.
In fairness to Villa, four of their recent defeats have been against top four contenders Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, and Everton, who are gathering pace after two successive league wins. Villa were also unlucky not to score on Monday night at Loftus Road, when Tom Cleverley's shot was well saved by Rob Green, and ex-Spurs' "Beast"" Sandro managed to get a foot in to stop the follow-up shot going in the net.
You have to ask why Villa haven't managed to even bother the scorers in recent games, and why they have only managed four goals in their 9 league games. Agbonlahor and Weimann have bagged two apiece. Villa made such a fine (and surprisingly good) start to the season, culminating in their 1-0 surprise win at Anfield. They even failed to score against Leyton Orient, who knocked them out of the Capital One Cup. Yet again, it is certainly not good to be a "Villan", but the home fans will be arriving in hope for the 4pm kick-off (live on Sky).
Villa have got Benteke back, after his seven month lay-off, but he hasn't hit the net yet. Former Spur Darren Bent (now 30) is also back with his home club after last season's loan spell at Fulham, but the only game he has started was their league cup defeat at home to Leyton Orient. Another ex-Spur at Aston Villa is Alan Hutton, who has been out of favour, and spent time out on loan with Mallorca in the 2012-13 season, and at Bolton last season. Hutton is still a regular for Scotland, and has made 8 Premier League starts for Villa this season. He will be missing tomorrow though with an ankle injury.
Villa are also missing midfielder Fabian Delph, who dislocated his shoulder playing for England against Estonia last month. Former Arsenal and Fulham defender, Swiss International Phillippe Senderos, is another player who got injured on International duty, and will be sitting this one out.
Kyle Naughton had a successful return to action in Wednesday night's win oveer Brighton, and could retain the right back position, with Eric Dier perhaps having suffered from being over-played recently. Spurs announced that both Aaron Lennon and Etienne Capoue need late tests, with Capoue's availability more important. Bentaleb (injured playing for Algeria last month), and Kyle Walker remain absent.
The big question being asked is whether Harry Kane will win a starting place, having scored 8 goals in Europa League and Capital One Cup games. I suspect Adebayor will remain, and we will see the "A" team of Lloris; Naughton/Dier, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose; Capoue/Dembele, Mason; Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli; Adebayor.
One of those appalling Villa records in both Premier League and games v Tottenham has to end soon. Will it be tomorrow? I'm saying Villa will at least score, but Spurs will win 2-1 to return to the top half of the Premier League, where they really do belong.
Tomorrow's match referee is Neil Swarbrick, who we last saw at West Brom in April, when we drew 3-3. Harry Kane scored that day, and was in the middle of scoring in three consecutive Premier League games. He's definitely knocking on that door!
· 10 years ago this week-end, Spurs lost 2-0 at Craven Cottage. It was Jacques Santini's last game in charge, after his very short Spurs career.
