Nothing has changed - we just have to keep winning!
As far as Spurs' title prospects are concerned nothing has changed after todday's 4-0 battering by Leicester over a Swansea team that played as if it was already on the beach, despite the fact they are not yet mathematically safe from relegation. I actually predicted a Leicester win in this game, and I think they will beat Everton at home. It's the away games against Man Utd and Chelsea I expect them to lose, or at least lose points. Spurs just have to keep winning their games, and tomorrow night's home game against West Brom is our first priority.
One could ask the question, what has manager Tony Pulis done for West Bromwich Albion? Tony Pulis was appointed as West Brom manager in January last year, with the objective to ensure survival. He did that, but managed just a two place improvement in their league position. They finished thirteenth last year, but currently sit in 15th place after a run of five games without a win. The "Baggies" have managed just one goal in those games - scored by Sessegnon at Man City in a 2-1 defeat.
West Brom will be in the Premier League again next season, although they too are not yet mathematically safe, and I suppose that is Tony Pulis's achievement. The club will play in the top flight for the seventh consecutive season in 2016-17, which will make it their longest continuous period in the top level since a run of 10 seasons between 1976 and 1986. Yet, it hasn't been the most exciting time to be a West Brom fan, I'd suggest. Perhaps for a "Baggies" fan the most notable achievements have been a league "double" against Stoke City, and a home win over Manchester United. The only game in which Pulis's side have scored three times was at home against Crystal Palace in February. Only Aston Villa have scored less Premier League goals than West Brom this season.
We haven't exactly covered ourselves with glory in recent home games against West Brom. They last visited White Hart Lane in September 2014, and it was one of those home games we wanted to forget, because we under-achieved and lost. (Spurs 0 West Brom 1, 21.09.14). We did get revenge with a 3-0 win at The Hawthorns in January last year, but this season's away game was drawn. (West Brom 1 Spurs 1, 05.12.15).
Our previous two home games before that September 2014 defeat were only drawn, and we have to go back to January 2012 for our last home win, which was a 1-0 thanks to a Jermain Defoe second half goal. Kyle Walker is the only remaining Spurs player from our team of that day, but Sandro ("Tottenham Hotspur's Brazilian Yiddo") could feature in tomorrow's game, but in a West Brom shirt. Sandro, who was very much a favourite in his time at The Lane, has had a mixed time since his dearture to QPR, and is currently on loan with Tony Pulis's West Bromwich Albion. He had his first two 90 minute games against Sunderland and Liverpool, but missed the home defeat against Watford. On Thursday night, Sandro was taken off at half-time in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal.
A current Spurs player on West Brom's books is Alex Pritchard. Alex has had a hip/thigh injury, but would be ineligible for this game anyway. Alex, who only turns 23 on 3rd May, has had very little game time since going to The Hawthorns in January. He had a great season last year with Brentford, and Spurs fans see him as a great hope for the future, but it has to be make or break time for his Spurs career very soon, I would suggest.
Of course we are all familiar with the story of Saido Berahino, still seen as a potential future Spur, but after his two penalties against Watford's Heurelho Gomes on Saturday, and his lack of game time this season, I am not so sure he is right for Spurs. Berahino's attitude when our transfer bid did not go through probably doid not impress Pochettino as much as it did not impress West Brom.
One thing any Pulis side will do is make it difficult for the opposition, and I don't expect them to be adventurous at White Hart Lane.
The good news for Spurs is there are no new injury problems, so Mauricio Pochettino will surely field an unchanged side tomorrow night. even Clinton N'Jie is available for selection with Nabil Bentaleb the only absentee.
Spurs have to win the game to close the gap to five points again, with three games to play, taking the Premier League race into the first of three final matches next week. Bearing in mind that Man City and Arsenal have to meet in the penultimate game of the season, a win tomorrow will also confirm top three. Leicester can already start planning for the group stage of next season's Champions League.
I think we will win, and have predicted a 2-0 win.
Tomorrow's match referee is Robert Madley, and is still fairly new on the Premier League list, having refereed his first Spurs game at Swansea in December 2014. That was a 2-1 win for Spurs. This season, Mr Madley, who comes from Huddersfield, has been in charge of our home draw against Stoke last August, and our 2-2 home FA Cup draw against Leicester when he awarded us a late penalty to enable the equalising goal.
Did you know? - Spurs' first competitive meeting with West Bromwich Albion was in April 1901, when we beat them 4-0 in an FA Cup semi-final on our way to our first historic FA Cup Final victory. Sandy Brown (who scored in every round for Spurs, and scored 15 Cup goals in total) scored all four goals for Spurs!
