Destined always to be the away team?
This International break is always going to be remembered not for the football which took place, but for the terrible night of Friday 13th November, 2015 in Paris. All Premier League teams will be paying their respects to those who suffered at the hands of terrorism this week-end, and those attending White Hart Lane need to be aware of the likelihood of longer queues to enter the ground, due to heightened security checks.
The England-France International which took place on Tuesday will mainly be remembered by the emotional pre-match ceremony and silence, when footballers, dignitaries and royalty made a forceful statement to the world. Once again, the sound of "La Marseillaise" will ring out around Premier League grounds, and our thoughts will be with our Captain, and French Captain, Hugo Lloris, along with all those from across The Channel.
One footballer who will remember Tuesday night with great joy is 19 year old Dele Alli, thrust into Premier League and senior International limelight this season, making a great impact on both stages. After three substitute appearances for Roy Hodgson's England, Alli was given a full debut against France and scored a magnificent goal against his club team-mate Hugo Lloris. Alli also had a hand in Rooney's goal, making impactive tackles on the way to both goals.
Roy Hodgson says he likes to watch Tottenham play, because he gets the chance to watch as many as five of his England proteges. With no other Premier league game being played on Sunday, Hodgson is likely to be at The Lane again, where he enthused as much as any Spurs fan when Harry Kane broke his league scoring duck this season against Man City.
Sunday's visitors, West Ham, might have "won the World Cup" in 1966 with Moore, Hurst and Peters, but they have no current representation in the England senior set-up. Andy Carroll is currently fit, and does have full England caps, but his time with England has surely concluded. West Ham skipper Mark Noble is perhaps the best uncapped English Premier League player. Noble made appearances at under-21 level, but never for the senior team. Noble is West Ham through and through. He is a one club man, and has made 292 league appearances, scoring 33 goals in the process. Noble, as much as anybody will be "The Hammers" driving force on Sunday.
Slaven Bilic has certainly been an impactive force upon West Ham this season. There was a time (pre Harry Redknapp days) when I heard rumours that Bilic was considered desirable by Spurs. At the time, Bilic was manager of a successful Croatian side, which included Spurs players Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka.
Bilic's West Ham have taken many by surprise this season with some astounding away wins. They started at The Emirates (2-0), before beating Liverpool (3-0), and Man City (2-1). "The Hammers" also beat Chelsea at home using an away team strategy at home. Clearly that strategy has worked very well, and I expect it will be deployed on Sunday. One could say that West Ham are destined to be the away team for a long time to come, as they take over their leased occupation of the Olympic Stadium next season (on the cheap, of course).
There is a certain "irony" (geddit?) about West Ham going to the Olympic Stadium, which THFC coveted, although diehard Spurs fans wanted none of that. We now have our wish of a new stadium at our real home.
The only reason we are above West Ham at this time is goal difference, but their form has dipped a little in their last two games. They lost 2-0 at Watford, when centre-back James Collins was sent off towards the end of the game. Collins will be serving the second of his three match suspension this week. Two weeks ago, West Ham could only manage a draw at home to Everton. 22 year old Manuel Lanzini scored his third Premier League goal of the season. Lanzini's touch may be required, as top scorer Dimitri Payet is out for three months with an ankle injury.
Spurs' known absentees include Erik Lamela, who is suspended for one game following his fifth yellow card at The Emirates Stadium. Nacer Chadli and Alex Pritchard are our only long term injury concerns. Nabil Bentaleb played 80 minutes for Algeria in the break. He started their second game, against Tanzania, but came off after only 35 minutes, after what Mauricio Pochettino has described as a horrendous tackle. Bentaleb may be okay for next Thursday's trip to Qarabag.
Spurs morale is tip-top at the moment. Firstly there have been the pleasant footballing headlines for England's Dele Alli, Eric Dier and to a lesser extent, Harry Kane and Kyle Walker. Ryan Mason was called into the squad for the France game. Secondly, there is that unbeaten run in the Premier League since Day One at Old Trafford. Thirdly, our last game is fresh in our minds, when we should have beaten Arsenal away.
Lamela's enforced absence may allow Dele Alli an attacking midfield role, with Ryan Mason playing beside Dier. With an in-form Dembele beside him, and the always creative Eriksen also present, Harry Kane could benefit from some real opportunities being created. I haven't even mentioned Son, but I think he may start on the bench for this game. I'm going for a 2-0 home win!
Our match referee will be Anthony Taylor, who is now well established on the Premier League list. Mr Taylor is now regularly refereeing matches in Europe too, at club and International level. We last saw this referee in May, when we beat Hull City 2-0 at home.
