Up against it
We knew before the season started that Spurs faced a hectic programme of up to 9 games in the first three weeks. There was a little alleviation last week with the postponement then the award of our Third Round tie after Leyton Orient's squad was debilitated by positive tests for Covid-19. We've made it to the third week and remain in the Europa League for Thursday's play-off game at home to Maccabi Haifa.
Sadly our opponents for this fourth round Carabao Cup tie are our nemesis when it comes to results in any competion. Of course it does not help that Chelsea played their last game on Saturday, and after this game, they next play on Saturday. Spurs have a Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday programme, and with progress to the Europa league group stage a clear priority, Jose Mourinho will surely be fielding a weakened side for this game.
THFC would not allow me the fly the Spurs Odyssey flag in the stadium for these behind closed doors games but it will feature in my match report!
Of course, the last time Spurs won a trophy was in the 2008 League Cup Final. In the years since Chelsea have won Three Premier league titles, 4 FA Cups, 1 League Cup (that was against us), 1 Champions League (that one hurt us very badly) and 2 Europa leagues. Of the 11 trophies since 2008, two were won with Jose Mourinho at the helm. Those were the League title and the League Cup in 2015.
Our recent record against Chelsea and the trophies won (particularly in the Abramovich era) hurts. Despite remaining out of the UK due to his Visa issues with UK Government, the Chelsea owner has been happy to see his latest manager Frank Lampard given plenty of money to bolster his squad. Yes, Chelsea have made up for lost time after missing out on two transfer windows for their previous transgressions, and they also had a sizeable kitty after the sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, but the amount of money this club has spent this summer has been offensive to some in these Covid-19 affected times.
Those signings include Hakim Zayech from Ajax (not likely to play before 3rd October), Timo Werner from Leipzig, Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, Ben Chilwell from Leicester, PSG's Thiago Silva (on a free transfer) and now goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
There could hardly be a worse time to be playing Chelsea. They'll be sore from their embarrassing performance at The Hawthorns on Saturday and the manager will be able to field a very strong team however he organises his rotation and selection. Jose Mourinho has indicated that Harry Kane will not play, and hardly anyone who started on Sunday is likely to be involved here.
It is very difficult for this Spurs fan to get excited or to feel optimistic about the game. That said there are decent players who could be involved such as Gazzaniga/Hart; Aurier, Alderweireld (Capt.), Carter-Vickers, Sessegnon; Dele, Ndombele; Lamela, Lucas Moura, Bergwijn. Could Danny Rose even get a game? I doubt it if a move is on the cards in the final week of the transfer window.
I've not seen any formal team news, and Jose is playing his cards close to his chest. However, I have seen pre-match comments from both Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura, one or both of whom could be involved. I am afraid I forsee our first Cup exit of the season, but I hope our lads do us proud. The game is being shown on Sky Sports and kicks off at 7.45pm.
Tonight's match referee is Lee Mason. Mr. Mason has never been a favourite and he was our VAR official for Sunday's game against Newcastle where he recommended that referee Peter Bankes review the Eric Dier "handball" on the pitch-side monitor. Common sense should have dictated that no such review was warranted. I don't think Mr. Mason is one of the club's favourites either. His last game in charge of Spurs was our 3-2 win over Bournemouth last November, and even now over 13 years since his first Spurs game in April 2007, Mr Mason has refereed only 21 of our games.
