Three is the magic number!

Burnley v Spurs, 27.10.21

Spurs scored three goals on Saturday against Manchester City (our fifth three-goal haul of the league season) and Burnley scored three away to Brighton. That was only Burnley's third win of this season in league and cups, and also their third three-goal return this season. Three certainly is the magic number regarding this fixture, which kicks off at 7.30pm tomorrow and is not being televised live in the UK. If you have access to SKY, look out for their 90-minute coverage during the night after the game has finished.

This is a re-arranged date for the fixture which was snowed off only an hour before kick-off on 28th November. The original match preview can still be read, but some of the detail will be replicated here. We had previously beaten Burnley in a Carabao Cup 4th Round tie in October, so this will be my third trip to Turf moor this season!

Burnley suffered more postponements than other teams, most of which were covid-related and not necessarily in Burnley’s camp. They were the last team to reach the half-way stage of this season’s Premier League campaign, playing their nineteenth game on 5th February against Watford. Burnley’s next game (also a draw, against Manchester United) was their 5,000th professional league game since they were established in 1888. Burnley were one of the 12 founding members of the Football League and their very first match was against Preston North End. That was an away game and a 5-2 defeat. It would not be long before Preston became Double winners and when we won the Double in 1961, only Aston Villa and Preston North End had previously achieved the feat. We were the first team to win the Double in modern times, of course and in those days, Burnley were arch-rivals, having won the League in 1960, as well as losing the 1962 FA Cup Final to holders Spurs.

Less than half of Burnley’s league games have been in the top flight and it is interesting to note that their 3,000th game was in Division Two and the 4,000th was in the third tier. Believe it or not Burnley lost that game 2-0 at home to Northampton! Manager Sean Dyche is third highest in the list of managers of Burnley League games. Dyche still has a pub named after him near the Turf Moor Stadium.

Whilst Spurs have won their last two home games against Sean Dyche's men convincingly (5-0 and 4-0), our last three visits to Turf Moor have been difficult. In the last league match before the March 2020 lockdown we drew 1-1. We were grateful for Giovani's Lo Celso's bright second half performance and a penalty converted by Dele Alli. Erik Lamela had been fouled.

Last season's game was a tight affair, won by what was a typical Kane-Son combination in the 76th minute. This match had been preceded by high scoring games against Maccaibi Haifa (7), Manchester United (6), West Ham (3), and LASK (3). Kane and Son had scored 10 goals between them in those games. After Saturday's game. Harry and Sonny are joint leaders of the all-time Premier League pairing with regard to goal scoring involvement of two players. The last of the three visits to which I refer was the October League Cup game.

When they lost 2-0 at Anfield in August Burnley established a Premier League record for the most consecutive matches without receiving a red card (95). This was one more than Ipswich Town’s previous record of 94 matches. (Courtesy of Declan Mulcahy) Burnley haven't had a red card since either, so that figure now amounts to 115.

Burnley surprised all with only their second league win of the season against Brighton, and their first since October. Aaron Lennon scored an excellent right-footed goal and Sean Dyche's men managed to lift themselves off the bottom of the table. They have a goal difference considerably better than their rivals at the foot of the table, and a couple of games in hand. Of course, we hope they get nothing from this one!

The January sale of Chris Wood to Newcastle was a surprise, but the £25 million fee was good business. Dyche managed to replace Wood with 29-year-old Dutchman Wout Weghorst from Wolfsburg. Weghorst has settled well and scored his first Burnley goal at Brighton. The tall frontman supplements the summer signing of Maxwell Cornet (from Lyon), who has six Burnley goals to his name.

Aaron Lennon returned to Burnley last summer after signing a short-term contract. Lennon, 35 in April, was a free agent after leaving Turkish club Kayserispor. Aaron made his Premier League debut in August 2003 against Spurs, and scored the first of his 37 Premier League goals for Leeds in December 2004. 26 of his Premier league goals were in Spurs' colours.

There is no change expected to the Spurs squad for tomorrow's game, which means Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp are definitely not involved. Sergio Reguilon is still recovering from Covid and it seems unlikely he will take part. I've seen no definite team news from Burnley. James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood missed the Brighton game, and it seems their absence was Covid related. Vydra and Gudmundsson are definitely out. Cornet and Weghorst face late fitness tests.

Conte's Spurs will have to adopt a different strategy for this game after last Saturday. I imagine we will return to a front three including Lucas Moura, perhaps for Kulusevski. The fresh legs of Harry Winks may be required in midfield. All will be revealed an hour before kick-off! Perhaps three will be the magic number tomorrow night and Spurs will win. I'll say 3-1.

Did you know? (1) - Alan Woods, who died last September, aged 84, was a half-back who played 6 games for Spurs in the 1954-55 season. His last game (the only one he played for us in 1955) was a home match against Burnley, which we lost 3-0. We did not win any of the games in which he played.

Did you know? (2) - Burnley manager Sean Dyche is well-remembered for his captaincy of Chesterfield in their famous 1997 FA Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough, but did you know he also played for Millwall at the turn of the 21st century. Dyche played against Spurs in this 2001 friendly match.

This will be referee Graham Scott's first game in charge of a Spurs game since November 2020 when we beat Brighton 2-1. This will be Mr. Scott's 12th game in the middle for Spurs.
