Fed up with playing Chelsea? I am.
Thomas Tuchel celebrates his first year at Chelsea next week. In his first year he has won his club The Champions League (against Manchester City) and taken Chelsea to two other cup finals. They lost last year's FA Cup Final to Leicester, but Tuchel has now taken Chelsea to this year's Carabao Cup Final thanks to our recent semi-final defeat. In his first year, Tuchel's Chelsea have beaten Spurs four times already in competitive games, and we haven't managed to score a goal.
We did manage to score a couple of goals in the pre-season Mind Series game at Stamford Bridge in August, but of course that was played under "friendly" terms.
Even Brighton have managed two draws against Chelsea in recent games, and scored a goal in each game. I thought Chelsea looked tired on Tuesday night. I bet they are 100% ready for Spurs tomorrow. I am so fed up with playing Chelsea (and I dislike the trip to Stamford Bridge) that I chose not to attend this game but will instead watch from behind the sofa. How can one be confident of getting any sort of result against a team we have only beaten 7 times in 59 Premier League matches. That remains a disgusting record and of course it includes one solitary (but marvellous) away win nearly four years ago. Christian Eriksen scored a cracker in first half added time, and Dele Alli (still in his pomp then) scored two goals in the space of four second half minutes. We were 3-1 up without Harry Kane on the pitch! (He replaced Son after 74 minutes). That April 2018 win was our last league win against Chelsea.
Chelsea have dropped 16 points from the last ten games and sit third in the Premier League, without a win in their last four matches. 11 of those points have been dropped in the last six league matches, of which they have won just one. When they lost 1-0 last week at The Etihad, I thought City looked as superior to Chelsea as Chelsea had against us in our Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Stamford Bridge. I fear for our chances on Sunday. Knowng our luck, we'll probably draw them in the FA Cup later this season.
The headline for my preview for the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge turned out to be a naive "Could this be a good time to play Chelsea?" We were beaten 2-0 and the tie was effectively lost. Our last two away league games have provided us with thrilling late winners. Antonio Conte is realistic about our true levels, and we must not be too hopeful of a result tomorrow.
There is good news about the definite return of Eric Dier who has been a lynch-pin in the middle of our back three. Conte was being guarded about a couple of other players who featured on Wednesday, but who have "problems". We must wait till after this unusual January International break for the return of Romro and Son.
Chelsea are still missing wing-backs James and Chilwell (the latter is out for the season). Trevoh Chalobah is not ready to return and Andreaas Christensen is doubtful after a bout of Covid. First choice keeper Edouard Mendy is still on duty with Senegal in the African Cup of Nations.
To get any sort of result, Spurs need to be in the inspired form they found in the last 80 seconds of the game at Leicester. The team effort was great throughout that game but we must make our chances count. Call me naive again if you like, but I am predicting a 2-2 draw, which would be a great result. A win would put us in dreamland - perhaps in fourth place and with four games in hand over Chelsea who would be just five points ahead.
It is great news to know that Hugo Lloris has signed a new contract which lasts until June 2024. Hopefully, he will be making his 396th Spurs appearance tomorrow. Hugo's first game against Chelsea for Spurs was an away fixture in May 2013. Whatever the result tomorrow, we can legitimately think of ourselves as contenders for a top four place, thanks to Antonio! The game kicks off at 4.30pm and is live on SKY SPORTS.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
Did you know? - Antonio Conte is now unbeaten in his first 9 Premier League matches with Spurs. He managed four unbeaten games when he started at Chelsea before losing 2-1 at home to Liverpool in September 2016.
Our match referee for the fourth time this season is Paul Tierney. Mr Tierney was in charge of our home game against Chelsea in September and als refereed our away game at Stamford Bridge in November 2020. That was Mr. Tierney's last game in the middle at Stamford Bridge.
