Easter Points hunt
There was a time when Premier League teams would play two games over Easter, and when that holiday period was often considered a deciding time in the football programme. Nowadays, The Premier League takes it relatively easy over Easter, but the Football League does still have a full two-match programme.
The fact that we are playing just one game does not make Easter any less vital to title, European qualification and relegation issues, so tomorrow, both Spurs and Fulham will be on an Easter Saturday points hunt.
Football is, of course, "a funny old game", and this mid-week has seen two surprising results affecting top teams - Everton and Man City. Everton lost at home to Crystal Palace (surely assured of Premier League safety), whilst Sunderland managed a point in their desperate quest for survival. Indeed, Sunderland seem to have a bit of a hex over City, despite their new-found fortune in recent years. They've taken four points off City this season, and probably done enough to prevent the moneybags team from taking this season's title.
A couple of weeks ago, Fulham were rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, but Felix Magath's men have given themselves a fighting chance with two consecutive wins over teams within their reach - Aston Villa and Norwich.
No result in tomorrow's game would surprise me, not least because with Martin Jol at the helm, Fulham managed a win at White Hart Lane last season for the first time in ten years (Spurs 0 Fulham 1 - 17th March, 2013). The "funny old game" syndrome came into play again, because Berbatov scored the Fulham goal. On this day, AVB caused a bit of consternation by playing Assou-Ekotto on the left side of midfield.
That Fulham defeat was our third consecutive defeat in a week, and the same thing happened in March this year.
Spurs have also generally dominated Fulham away from home in recent years. The last time Fulham beat us at their place in the League was in November 2008. I won't mention an FA Cup disaster three years ago. In this season's away game, we won 2-1 at Craven Cottage, with Vlad Chiriches and Lewis Holtby scoring for Spurs. (Fulham 1 Spurs 2 - 4th December, 2013)
Lewis Holtby has been a key member of the Fulham side since Spurs loaned him out in January, having scored one goal, and assisted in several important goals for his temporary side. Many Spurs fans have been disappointed that Holtby has not been available to us this side of January. Considering our injury problems, and inability to create scoring opportunities on many occasions, he would surely have played a part for Tottenham. Lewis will not, of course be available for our visitors tomorrow.
Last week, Holtby was replaced by former Spur Scott Parker, who may get his starting place tomorrow. Another former Spur who has featured for Fulham recently is Clint Dempsey, who spent a short period on loan, but is now back playing for Seattle Sounders, for whom he has scored five goals in their last two games (drawn 4-4 and won 3-2, both away).
Fulham don't have as bad a run-in as some of their rivals, with two home games against Hull and Palace to finish their season, sandwiching a game at Stoke, the week after our visit to The Britannia Stadium.
There could be more than one cause of confusion on the pitch tomorrow, because both sides have a Mous(s)a Dembele, and both could play. Fulham's Dembele has two esses in his first name, whilst our player has one letter S. The Fulham version is only 17, but was given a start against Everton three weeks ago by Magath. Our Dembele played 90 minutes in our under-21 game on Monday night, and should be available.
The Physio room indications are that Spurs could still be missing Sandro, Dawson, Soldado, Vertonghen, Walker, Capoue, and of course Lamela. The only major absentee for Fulham could be Damien Duff, who has a knee injury.
Quite why Fulham have had such a bad season, I don't know. They missed central defender Brede Hangeland for nearly three months, but they've still had bad results with him in the side. One theory is that as a side, they're just getting a bit too old.
I repeat, no result would surprise me in this game. It wouldn't surprise me if Adebayor got a hat-trick, nor would I be surprised if Fulham took advantage of another early Spurs howler or two. I'll go for a convincing home win though - 3-1.
If you are looking for omens, here's a bad one. Referee Lee Probert has been in charge of us only once before this season. That was the horrible 3-0 home defeat by West Ham. That was not his fault though.
