How the Foxes would love to beat us!

This season, we will play our 99th and 100th League games against Leicester City. The last game was at Wembley in February when we won 3-1. The game preceded a brilliant Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund, which became our fourth consecutive win after Watford, Newcastle and Leicester. That was our last 4 game winning run of the season.

The Leicester game was one in which Davinson Sanchez scored his first Spurs goal, and Hugo Lloris made the first of three consecutive penalty saves. The first was from Jamie Vardy. The second was from Aubameyang and the last of those three was in the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City from Sergio Aguero.

Our very first meetings against Leicester (then known as Leicester Fosse) came in the first round of the 1914 FA Cup. The away game was drawn 5-5, and we won the replay 2-0. The score had been 3-3 at half time in that first game before Leicester went 5-3 up. Billy Minter and Bert Bliss scored late goals to take Leicester back to The Lane. Bliss scored our second goal in that game, after Fanny walden had given us a first half lead.

Our first Football League game against Leicester was in September 1919. It was a Division Two game, which we won 4-0. Bert Bliss was on the scoresheet again, following a Tommy Clay penalty with Jimmy Cantrell scoring two more.

There have been several high scoring games between the two sides down the years. Leicester have scored 6 on two occasions, but Spurs have scored 6 in three games, the best of which was the most recent 6-1 drubbing at the King Power Stadium when Leicester were the reigning Premier League Champions.

Last year's away win against Leicester included a headed goal by Dele Alli which was similar to his first Spurs goal at the same ground in August 2015. It is amazing to think that we've had Dele for four years now, and he is still only 23. Dele has 132 Premier League appearances and 42 league goals to his name.

That last meeting with Leicester in February was Claude Puel's penultimate game in charge. Defeat to Spurs was followed by a 4-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace, which was the last straw for the "Foxes" executive. Brendan Rodgers' appointment was announced on February 26th, and after a run of seven games under Puel without a win, including an embarrassing FA Cup defeat at Newport, Leicester closed their season in better form with 6 wins from their last 11 games. The biggest scalp they claimed was that of Arsenal, who they beat 3-0 on 28th April with two goals by Jamie Vardy and one from Tielemans.

Whilst Leicester lost narrowly last week at Old Trafford, it was the same scoring combination of Vardy and Tielemans that gave them a 3-1 home win against Bournemouth three weeks ago. Tielemans was on loan last season, but was signed this summer for a fee thought to have been around £40 million. Another high profile buy was that of Newcastle's Ayoze Perez for £30 million. Leicester had money to burn of clourse with the record sale of Harry Maguire to United. Rodgers also signed Belgian midfielder Dennis Praet for £8 million from Sampdoria. Neither Perez or Praet have had an impact as yet, but it is early days.

The fact that Mauricio Pochettino left full backs Serge Aurier and Danny Rose at home midweek suggests they will start this game. Historically the Spurs manager has rotated his full backs more than any other position. We could see a return of the team which started the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace last week. Certainly a more effective performance is required from Spurs than that which we saw on Wednesday night in Greece. Leicester, of course, have had no midweek European game, but how they and their fans would love to beat Spurs tomorrow lunchtime. Those cardboard "Happy Clapping" devices will be out in force, alomg with the "Foxes" hunting clarion call. Despite the chances of the home side, I am still taking Spurs to win this one 2-1.

Match referee Paul Tierney has been in charge of just two Spurs games. On both occasions we scored 6 goals! the first was the February 2018 FA Cup replay against Rochdale. The second and last game was our 6-2 win at Goodison Park last December. I'll settle for any win tomorrow!

· "Ten Years After" - Spurs Odyssey reviews the season in which we first qualified for the Champions League. On September 20th 10 years ago we fell to a second consecutive defeat to a top four challenging opponent.
