Never mind zero carbon, Spurs fans, I fear zero points.
Spurs' 59th Premier League meeting with Chelsea on Sky's "Super Sunday" is being hyped up as a "Zero Carbon" match where everything possible is being done to reduce our carbon footprint on the day. Never mind zero carbon, Spurs fans! With our long list of injuries and other possible absentees and Chelsea's form and great strength in depth, even this most optimistic of fans fears zero points for Spurs this weekend.
Chelsea's romantic experiment with Frank Lampard as their manager ended on January 26th this year with the club sitting precariously outside the Champions League places. Why, they were even below Tottenham! Spurs fan Thomas Tuchel was appointed and since then, Chelsea have lost just five out of 36 games played in all competitions. The "Blues" are unbeaten in 6 games this season, and in my view they are major title contenders this season.
Under Tuchel, Chelsea just about secured their Champions League place this season, before ensuring they would be in Pot 1 by beating Manchester City in last season's final. For good measure this season they have already secured the European Super Cup, beating Villarreal in the penalty shoot-out. Chelsea were thwarted by Leicester in last season's FA Cup Final.
Tuchel is Chelsea's fifteenth manager in the Abramovich reign. That is a reign which has yielded countless trophies. By comparison, Spurs have had 10 managers/coaches, including of course one who worked for Chelsea twice! In 2020 the club paid out big money for Leipzig's goalscoring machine Timo Werner. In truth the goals were already drying up for Werner before he arrived at Chelsea. Now he has hardly had a kick this season and at a recent embarrassing "Fans' Forum" held at Stamford Bridge Werner was barracked by a loud-mouthed fan who said words to the effect of "Get him out of the club!"
Money, of course remains no object to Mr Abramovich, who still leads the club "in absentia" due to visa issues with the government, so Chelsea signed their own former player Romelu Lukaku for something like £95 million from Inter. Like so many players, Lukaku was initially loaned out but was then signed by Everton before his passage via Manchester United and Inter. He has already scored four goals this season - his first three were his first Chelsea Premier League goals, before he scored their Champions League winner against Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday night, two nights before Spurs played in Rennes. Lukaku played a key role in Inter winning Serie A last season, scoring 24 goals and registering 11 assists.
Chelsea have also signed Spain international midfielder Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan with the option of a permanent transfer next summer. Saul made his debut last week in the first half of their 3-0 win over Aston Villa. He might be seen as cover and a potential replacement for Ngolo Kante, who is now 30.
The attendance figure of 61,104 for our home game against Chelsea in December 2019 was the highest yet recorded for our new stadium.
Harry Kane holds the record for the highest number of goals both in North London Derbies (11) and all London Derby matches since 2012-13 (38). Olivier Giroud (now with AC Milan) was closest to Harry's total in all derby matches with 20 goals altogether when playing for both Arsenal and Chelsea.
We will face Arsenal (away) in our next Premier League fixture. We played Chelsea and Arsenal in consecutive league games three seasons ago in 2018/19. In November 2018 we played Chelsea at home before Arsenal away, as scheduled this year. The home game against Chelsea was a happy occasion as we won 3-1 with goals by Dele, Kane and Son. "Sonny"'s goal won awards coming at the end of a terrific run down the right flank. Spurs managed a rare form of double over Chelsea as they had finally ended the Premier League hoodoo of not winning at Stamford Bridge on April Fools' Day. Unfortunately we haven't managed another league win over Chelsea in five attempts since.
The might of Chelsea is hardly impeded by injuries. Christian Pulisic is the only definite absentee with an ankle injury. Kante might be available, but of course Tuchel has plenty of strength in depth. Spurs on the other hand have more names on the list of potential absentees (9) than any other side. Tanganga is suspended after his two yellow cards at Palace last week. We must hope that Sanchez, Romero and Lo Celso will be available after their return to England via Croatia where they have been isolating. There is an outside chance that "Sonny" and Eric Dier could be available, whilst Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn must be very doubtful after last night's game in France.
Sorry Spurs fans but I even predict defeat for us in this game, by an optimistic 2-1. It is sure to be a hot atmosphere with a massive crowd. Never mind the zero carbon (including sweet potato and lentil pie), I just hope I can still get a proper sausage roll!
Did you know> - On this day 20 years ago, Christian Ziege scored a 40-yarder at Sunderland!
Our match referee (his 13th with Spurs) will be Paul Tierney. Mr Tierney was in charge of our 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge last season. He has a high profile these days and took charge of this season's Community Shield match in which FA Cup Holders Leicester beat Manchester City. Last week, he was in the middle to oversee Man City's revenge at the King Power Stadium. That was also a 1-0.
