A derby match to relish
Let’s face it, West Ham have had a good year. Last season they finished in the Premier League’s top six for only the second time, and above Spurs who were demoted to the third tier European competition while "The Hammers" went into the group stage of The Europa League. The last time they played in Europe they didn’t get past the play-off phase. After beating Sevilla in a 120 minute battle on Thursday night they have a quarter-final game against Tanguy Ndombele’s Lyon. Earlier in the season, I heard a stat suggesting "The Hammers" had not played in a European knock-out game for forty years. That would be in the 1980-81 season when they reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup-Winners’ Cup as a second division side, having beaten Arsenal 1-0 in the 1980 FA Cup Final thanks to a rare Trevor Brooking headed goal. That FA cup was West Ham’s last major trophy. There was even a joke about that fact in last night’s Comic Relief programme.
That Cup-Winners’ Cup quarter-final was against Dinamo Tbilisi, who beat West Ham 4-1 at Upton Park. The West Ham side included Frank Lampard’s dad, former Spur Jimmy Neighbour and future Spur Paul Allen. "The Hammers" won their away match 1-0, but that was the end of their campaign. Incidentally, Spurs last met Tbilisi in the 2013 Europa League play-off when we won 8-0 on aggregate. We were disappointed to be knocked out by Benfica in the Round of 16 that season. Such is the level of expectation and achievements by Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (Champions League finalists in 2019 remember) as opposed to West Ham.
I cannot remember the last time West Ham were above us in the league at the time of a Premier League meeting. (Declan Mulcahy tells me it was only last February!) We travelled to The London Stadium early this season one point and two places above the team that loves to beat us so much. We left with our tails between our legs whilst West Ham climbed into fourth place. That was a position David Moyes’ side occupied for a lot of the season. For Nuno’s Spurs it was a fourth consecutive London Derby defeat of the season. Nuno had two games remaining before he was replaced. West Ham's win last October gave them a better Premier League record than Spurs when playing at home.
West Ham have won their last two Premier League encounters with Spurs, though both wins have been at home. They’re looking to do the league double against us for the first time since 2013/14, while they last won three consecutive league matches against Spurs in August 1999.
Whilst it is a fact that Spurs have lost just two of their last 19 Premier League home contests against West Ham (W10 D7), going down 3-0 in October 2013 and 1-0 in April 2019, the second of those defeats was our first in our new stadium, something that "Hammers" fans no doubt still gloat about. West Ham also crow about their late three-goal come-back in last season’s home game which finished 3-3.
Harry Kane has scored eight goals in his six home league matches for Tottenham Hotspur against West Ham United – it’s the most home goals he’s scored against a specific opponent in the competition. Once again there is no change in our squad, and I expect Antonio Conte to field the same side as that which beat Brighton on Wednesday night. Japhet Tanganga is now out for the season, having had knee surgery this week. David Moyes will be too well aware of how we play. Whilst he has right back Coufal and level top scorer Jarrod Bowen missing (Antonio has also scored 8 league goals), his side also plays in a settled style. We must hope for tired legs after their Thursday night rigours against a tough Sevilla side.
West Ham's squad will include Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko, who has scored in the last two games, leading to emotional scenes at The London Stadium.
The game is Sky’s big match, kicking off at 4.30pm tomorrow. There is a lot at stake, as we go into the game level on points chasing a top four place. I’m taking Spurs to win 2-1. There should be a great atmosphere. Tony Marchi will be remembered before the game and Spurs players will wear black armbands. Former secretary Peter Barnes (who also performed the role for West Ham) will also be remembered.
After scoring from the penalty spot against Watford on 28th December, Mark Noble became West Ham’s joint-second all-time Premier League goalscorer alongside Paolo Di Canio with 47 goals. Wow! Antonio must be top with his 54. Kane has 178. Of our current squad, Son has 81. Sheringham, Keane and Defoe also scored over 90 Premier League goals for Spurs! In a senior career which began on 24th August, 2004, Noble has scored 55 league goals for "The Hammers", but of course not all of them have been in The Premier League. Noble will be 35 in May and whilst he remains the club captain, his Premier League appearances have been in single figures in the last two seasons.
Anthony Taylor is refereeing a Spurs competitive game for the 38th time. His last Spurs game was the Manchester City game at the Etihad. Let's hope he again sees a Spurs win tomorrow! Mr Taylor has refereed 16 International and European games over the last year. On Thursday night he was in the Netherlands for Feyenoord v Partizan in the European Conference League. On 5th March, Mr Taylor was in charge of Norwich v Brentford when Christian Eriksen made his first start in a game since his collapse last June when playing for Denmark. Mr Taylor had been the referee for that game too.
